The Hillsboro Rotary Club welcomed representatives from the Ohio State University Extension Office in Highland County as our guests this past June.
Rotarians enjoyed learning about the many ways the Extension Office serves our community through education, outreach, and research-based programs. Their work includes agriculture and natural resources, family and consumer sciences, youth development through 4-H, community development, and educational programs that help improve the quality of life for Highland County residents.
Our speaker, Ty Hamilton, Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator, shared valuable information on a topic that generated significant discussion—and had Rotarians itching—Alpha-gal Syndrome, a tick-borne condition that can cause an allergy to red meat and other mammal products. Ty also discussed tick prevention, identification, and the growing importance of monitoring tick populations in our area.
Did you know? If you find a tick on yourself, a family member, or a pet, you can place it in a sealed plastic bag and bring it to the Highland County Extension Office. They will send the tick to their lab for identification and disease testing. In fact, they receive several ticks each week from local residents.
Thank you to Ty Hamilton and the Ohio State University Extension Office for sharing your knowledge and helping keep our community informed!
