CHARLES GIRARD: A FRENCHMAN DESCRIBES THE REBEL YELL…

Charles Girard was a Frenchman who joined the Confederate war effort by promoting the Confederate cause in Europe and accepting a commission to supply the Southern armies with medical equipment and arms. In 1863, he slipped through the blockade and traveled through Virginia and the Carolinas to study the Confederacy. He wrote his observations and published the account of his trip the following year. The following is his description of the effects of the Rebel Yell.

“One characteristic is peculiar to Confederate soldiers. That is, when there is an order to charge, at first there prevails a deep silence. The silence is succeeded by a rasping yell sent out by the whole column, a cry that strikes horror into the enemy’s ranks. All of the prisoners are of one accord in saying that, when they heard that yell, they experienced as a result of it the feeling of terror that they could not describe, except by comparing it to on-coming death.” Charles Girard,1863.

It’s spring and schools will be covering the Civil War soon. Let us know if you need a visit this year, as soon as you can. I’m trying to collaborate with NorthWest Civil War Council as well.
