The Sound of Silence
Kathi Pelton

Did you know that silence has a sound that heaven hears?

People are often uncomfortable with silence, especially within the context of a corporate setting or with another person present. Yet, the people that you can sit in silence with are usually the most intimate people in your life. And, if that is the case— why are we so uncomfortable with silence in prayer, silence in worship or silence in church?

Silence has a sound…

The sound of silence is the sound of pouring out your surrender. Just as occurs with the pouring out of perfume— it has no audible sound and yet the fragrance fills the room and immerses all in its beauty.

Silence is a response to awe. It is the sound of the fear of the Lord; of reverence and awe. It stops every act of striving and frantic activity to yield to the posture of fully trusting God. Silence before the Lord is to be still and acknowledge that he alone is God.

Silence makes room! It makes for heaven to touch earth; and earth is his footstool. When do we use a footstool? When we enter a resting posture— therefore if earth is his footstool, we are designed to be a resting place for the Lord. Silence is the sound of rest.

This is what the LORD says:
“Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house that you would build for me, and where will my resting place be? All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came into being,”declares the LORD. “But this is the one to whom I will look favorably: to the one who is humble and contrite in spirit, and who trembles at my message.” Isaiah 66:1-2

Silence trembles at his Word and takes a posture of a humble and contrite spirit. Silent trust makes a resting place for our hearts and his heart that beats within us. It is the sound of intimate communion with him.

Isaiah 66 goes on to talk about a loud noise and that sound is the sound of God’s retribution,

“Listen to that uproar in the city!
Listen to that noise from the Temple!
It is the sound of the LORD paying back retribution to his enemies!” Isaiah 66:6

We can be silent and know that he will pay back retribution to his enemies— and our enemies.

Silence is also the peaceful expression of a child nursing at his mother’s breast. It nourishes, it comforts, it rests and receives life. Our prayers and our time spent with the Lord should include expressions of this posture. He desires to comfort us and nourish us with living water.

Do not shy away from silence with the Lord. It is the highest form of trust. Often the loudest prayers come from the most fearful people— those who are afraid that God does not hear and will not act. The enemy hates our quieted souls that fully trust and depend upon the God of all creation. For it is there that room is made for God to move.

Practice the art of silence— it is active trust, active faith, and active surrender to his power. Just as there are times for a joyful noise unto the Lord— there are times when we allow the spiritual sound of silence to release its fragrance.

“For God alone my soul in silence waits.” Psalm 62:1

Before I Formed You, I Knew You
Kathi Pelton

I recently went through a six month experience of healing and spiritual restoration after experiencing a traumatic situation. Though this article is not about the trauma or the situation, it is about an amazing truth that came out of this very painful time.

Throughout the months of wrestling and healing I noticed that I would often wake up at the exact same time: 6:13 am. While no one else would find those numbers significant, for me they were because I was born on June 13th (6/13). At first it was just something that I noticed but paid little attention to. But when it continued to happen I began to think that maybe God wanted to say something to me about my birth or about my life.

Then one day as I woke up once again seeing the time 6:13 I heard these words,

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…” Jeremiah 1:5 (a)

With those words a revelation came that took my breath away. I saw God’s original plan for each one of us and how beautifully unique and perfect it was. Then I saw myself in my physically unformed state and how even then I was fully formed in God’s eyes and heart. Who I was and who he created me to be (and who I will fully be in my glorified body one day) was perfect and beautiful to him.

Then I saw me put into my mother’s womb and as I grew physically, small imperfections were occurring. Then I was born— into an imperfect world to imperfect parents— and little by little “who he knew me to be before I was formed” was altered and redefined by life experiences, by sin, by traumas and by “Phileo” love (note: agape love is God’s unconditional love and phileo love is human conditional love).

God was showing me that he was using the crushing that I was experiencing to heal a deep wound within my soul that had altered me from who he created me to be. It was a wound that I was not consciously aware of because it had become so familiar that it had merged with my identity. To me, it was just part of who I am.

As I walked out this journey of healing I realized that he was restoring a part of me to the “me” that he knew before I was ever physically formed. And then I realized that his redemptive work in each one of us was restoring us to his original and unique identity that he created us to be. This revelation helped me to allow the Lord to go to the very root of the wound that altered a part of my identity during my formative years.

We are not who we think ourselves to be! But, we are being restored to who he knows us to be as we allow his Spirit to redeem us.

The final part of the revelation was that I saw each one of us after we leave our physical bodies being fully restored to “who he knew us to be before we were formed!” This may be obvious to some of you but it was like a trumpet blast of hope and expectation for me.

I am being restored now but will be fully restored and whole when I leave this body. I will finally be who he knows me and created me to be! And so will you.

Today, receive his words over your life,

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…”

He hasn’t forgotten and it is how he knows you even now. What you know of yourself is an altered version of a perfect and uniquely beautiful you. But he is restoring parts of you that you didn’t know existed. Sometimes it is in the crushing that true and pure oil is produced so do not resist because he may just be crushing the outer layer to allow the pure “you” to come alive and be restored.

“Lord, we invite you to redeem your original plan and identity that you created us in even before we were in our mother’s womb. Restore and bring forth who you created us to be before the foundations of the world existed. Thank you for your agape love that never stops making all things new.”

The Lord Says, “You Can’t Miss!”
Kathi Pelton

By nature the human race desires answers to our questions from a young age. Around two years old a toddler will discover the word "why" and it will become one of their most frequently used words. The discovery of answers is how we learn and how we learn to navigate this world.

As we grow in maturity and develop our personal relationship with God we must learn to trust him without always demanding an answer to the many "whys" that surround our journeys as we walk with him. We know that he is good and that his plans are to bless us so we follow Him into unknown paths by faith believing that he will order our steps.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah‬ ‭29:11‬ ‭

Our family has followed his voice by moving to other cities, states and even other countries while not understanding the many questions that flooded our minds in the process. We could have spend sleepless nights trying to figure out the answers but we learned that when things are hidden from our understanding that God has a reason for that as well. In the place of answers he provides a peace that surpasses understanding!

You may be in the midst of a change or transition that causes you to have more questions than answers. You can ask him why but if he doesn't answer then know that he has a reason for His silence. Lack of understanding should not shift your trust. You can trust him in the unknown; knowing that he is holding you and leading you with plans to prosper you and not harm you.

When I look back upon my many years of this "walk of faith" that my life has been on, I can truly say that I am grateful that he’s left many questions unanswered. If I had known more then I did at the time I might have feared that which I did not yet have grace to walk through or I may have misinterpreted the answer and altered the outcome.

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Proverbs 16:9,

“A man’s mind plans his way [as he journeys through life], But the LORD directs his steps and establishes them.” Proverbs‬ ‭16:9‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Quite a few years ago now, I was praying for our son-in-law while he was facing a possible life altering decision. He was so afraid of making the wrong decision and asked me to pray. As I prayed for him I heard the Lord say to me,

"Tell him that he cannot miss."

Honestly I thought that I heard wrong and prayed three more times asking the same question and getting the same answer.

I basically began to argue with God because I was thinking about how we have a free will and can make plans to go the wrong direction. Finally I changed my argument to a question and asked the Lord, “How can this could be true?” His answer amazed me.

He said,

"If a man's steps are committed to Me then even if he makes plans that are not aligned with My then I will redirect them and establish them according to My will. Tell him he can’t miss!”

Wow! What comforting words for us all! These are words that bring great peace and have been proven to be true in my life. Worry flees when I believe those words. I can't miss because my steps have been committed to him. Even if “my plans” get off track he will redirect and establish my steps according to his will— he will keep me from falling.

There is a song from a number of years ago that became a prayer for me and my family. It is called "Thy Will" by Hillary Scott. It is a prayer that is sung asking God for his will to be done. Here are some of the words,

"I know you see me
I know you hear me, Lord
Your plans are for me
Goodness you have in store

I know you hear me
I know you see me, Lord
Your plans are for me
Goodness you have in store
So

Thy will be done
Thy will be done
Thy will be done

Like a child on my knees
All that comes to me is
Thy will be done
Thy will be done
Thy will be done

I know you see me
I know you hear me, Lord"

(Writer(s): Hillary Scott, Emily Weisband and Bernie Herms)

Like a child we can trust our Father, even when we don't understand. Even if you have things that you’re facing that cause the “why’s” to surface; the truth is that you will see his goodness as you put your trust in him and receive his peace that surpasses your need for understanding.

He is good and in the midst of your "whys" you will see His goodness come forth in your life. Continue to commit your steps and your plans to him and you will be the recipient of his goodness and witness of his faithfulness.

Dig Deep Foundations
Kathi Pelton

In the construction industry it is known that if you want a building to go high— you first have to dig deep! I have found the same to be true in our spiritual lives. But, digging deep takes time and it takes patience.

I have far too often watched gifted men and women’s lives topple because their gift raised them to high places but they had shallow foundations that could not withstand the storms that came. It is tragic and it is avoidable.

Let’s look at what Luke 6:46-49 says,

““Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”” Luke‬ ‭6‬:‭46‬-‭49‬ ‭

Storms come to every life and at times they come with a flood of adversity. These times can cause your emotions to shake, your knees to tremble but your life in Christ will not be left in ruins if you will hear God’s words and do them. Build a deep foundation!

We see this exampled in the life of David— his emotions were shaken, his knees trembled but his faith was unmovable. David even questioned God’s ways but he did not come to ruin because he had dug a deep foundation that held his life secure throughout many storms and battles.

There’s an old saying that goes, “What goes up must come down.” but God’s truth is this, “What goes deep will not come down.”

Yet, if you build your life on a shallow foundation you will find devastation when storms and battles come your way. God does not want that for you and neither do I.

Going deep requires time, humility, work, patience, sacrifice and obedience. But it is so worth the time and effort. Foundations aren’t seen and they aren’t impressive to the human eye but what is build upon them will display the strength and fruit of what is unseen.

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is found in Song of Solomon 8:5,

“Who is that coming up from the wilderness, leaning on her beloved?”

“…the wilderness…”

For most of us, foundations that are dug deep happen in the wilderness seasons. It is when human weakness comes to a point of surrender and learns complete dependency on Jesus. We learn to lean upon the Rock that is our beloved.

I’ve been watching the construction process of a new high rise building near our church. For months it has looked like a big hole in the ground. The hole was so deep that you couldn’t see the workers or the work being done but I remember thinking that it must be a tall building that is coming because the foundation is so deep. Then (suddenly) the foundation was complete and the building is getting taller everyday— and quickly!

The unseen foundation is the most important part of the building. The same is true in our lives. But you must dig deep to remain through the storms of life.

There is good news if you are someone who did not take the time to go deep (dig deep)— you can go back and retrofit your life’s foundation. You can dig deep and allow his words and ways to become the rock on which your life is built. Do not allow the ruins that you see to tell you that all is lost.

LISTEN TO WHAT GOD SAYS TO YOU,

“O you afflicted [city], storm-tossed, and not comforted, Listen carefully, I will set your [precious] stones in mortar, And lay your foundations with sapphires….” Isaiah 54:11 AMP

Go deep so that you can see God build a life that touches the heavens and displays his Kingdom. A life that is always leaning upon your beloved savior.
