Association for India's Development (AID) is a non-profit US 501 c3 volunteer organization committed to promoting sustainable, equitable and just development in India. AID supports grassroots organizations in India and initiates efforts in various interconnected spheres such as education, livelihoods, natural resources, health, women's empowerment and social justice. Started in 1991 at University

of Maryland by a bunch of graduate students, AID has now grown into a large organization with almost 37 chapters in the US and over a 1000 volunteers supporting over a 100 projects. The Portland chapter of AID was founded in 1999 by a group of friends at the India Day celebration at Pioneer Square. In 2013, AID Portland supported 4 projects costing over USD 20000. In the same year, we were successful in hosting two fund raising events. TARANA, Portland's local Bollywood band, helped raise funds for AID on a fun-filled evening in April. The Portland Metro Open Cricket League supported us in raising funds for the Uttarakhand Relief Fund by playing in a 16 team 2 day cricket tournament. We also hosted eminent speakers including Shailesh Gandhi, Right to Information Activist and former Information Commissioner of India. Volunteers of AID are mainly involved in 2 activities.

1. Projects: Volunteers actively solicit project proposals from these NGOs, thoroughly evaluate the projects and finally help raise funds for these NGOs to implement them. The projects are reviewed in the chapter meetings by the project coordinators and are approved by a majority vote

2. Fund Raising: Volunteers also actively take part in organizing several fund-raising events throughout the year. Events include inviting music bands and concerts to play for AID, hosting fund-raising dinners, hosting local sports tournaments and other similar activities. In addition, for the effective functioning of the chapter, there are several roles which the volunteers take up. Chapter president, secretary, treasurer, overall project coordinator, webmaster and fund-raising coordinator are some of the roles. A story from Apna Skool to lift your spirits this Monday

"Hema's parents migrate from Bihar with their entire family for eight months a year (November to June) to work in the brick kilns of Kanpur, UP. Hema took non-formal education from Apna Skool and with the help of Apna Skool, she has completed her education till class 12th. After this, she wants to do B.A. ( Honors ) in Education stream from a good university in Kanpur for further studies.

Hema is currently teaching the children who are unable to go to school due to a pandemic in her village. The knowledge she gained from Apna Skool has empowered her to carry it forward in teaching other kids and bring awareness to them of their rights. She believes she can make a difference through education and that even a small contribution can make a big impact"

You can donate to OR-Portland Chapter to help us continue supporting Apna Skool and students like Hema.
