SIGNIFICANCE: As we approach Memorial Day this year, it is important for the community to stop and honor the memories of service members who gave all, and to thank those who made great sacrifices.

Earl Granville is a combat-wounded amputee who also lost his twin brother to PTSD-related su***de.

He spends time helping educate and motivate other service members by sharing his story and providing encouragement to those who are seeking mental/emotional assistance for their own pains.

He represents Operation Enduring Warrior, a non-profit organization whose mission is to Honor, Empower and Motivate wounded service members through physical, mental and emotional rehabilitation.

BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Beaverton city councilor Lacey Beaty was honored by the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs (ODVA) as a 2016 Outstanding Woman Veteran of the Year. The award i s given annually to three woman veterans who exemplify service as a veteran and as an outstanding member of the Oregon community. Councilor Beaty's award was announced today at the ODVA conference at Camp Withycombe in Clackamas.

Councilor Beaty began her service on the Beaverton City Council in 2015. She has successfully advocated for veterans' issues in Beaverton by encouraging the addition of service-disabled veteran business language added to the city's Minority, Women, and Emerging Small Business Policy and supporting making Beaverton the state's eighth Purple Heart City.

Councilor Beaty works full-time as the director for Virginia Garcia's school-based health clinics, overseeing six locations throughout Washington and Yamhill counties. She is active in the community including serving on the HomePlate Youth Services Board of Directors as well as a dedicated lacrosse coach at George Fox University.

Councilor Beaty served five years active duty in the U.S. Army as a radiology specialist and combat medic. She served in the First Infantry Division during the Iraq War. Prior to joining the city council, she was an active volunteer for the city's Visioning Advisory Committee, serving as vice-chair. She has an undergraduate degree in political science and a graduate degree in organizational leadership.

Thursday 3/3/16 - Open House dinner - doors open at 1630 with meal service beginning at 1700. Steak or salmon, veggies, rice, roll and desert. Requested donation is $6/meal and $2/beer with BYOWine.

Saturday 3/5/16 - Breakfast at the Post beginning at 0800 until noon. Come start the day with a full belly.

Thursday 3/10/16 - Open house dinner - Chef's surprise by Jeanette and Rose.

Friday 3/11/16 - March meetings - Auxiliary at 1800 and Post at 1930. These are important meetings in that officers for 2016-2017 will be nominated with the elections in April. Consider running for an office.

Sunday 3/13/16 - 1000-1500 - Shooting Sunday at the Newberg Rifle and Pistol Club.

Veterans Advisory Committee Meeting in Hillsboro

SALEM - The public is invited to attend and participate in the next quarterly meeting of the Advisory Committee to the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs. The meeting will be held at the Hillsboro Civic Center, 150 E. Main St., on December 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The nine-member committee is comprised of veterans appointed by the governor to provide counsel to the director of the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs.

The advisory committee's meetings are held throughout the state on the first Wednesday in March, June, September and December. Registration is not required, but is encouraged. RSVP online at: www.surveymonkey.com/r/ACDecember2015.

VA Updates Agent Orange Ship List: This week, VA added six new ships and expanded the dates for some already on the list of ships that operated on the inland waterways of Vietnam. Veterans whose military records confirm they were aboard these ships qualify for presumption of herbicide exposure.
