Slender Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum tenuifolium)
Named for its silvery, needle-like foliage, slender mountain mint is a clump-forming, well-behaved mint that features a profusion of small, white flowers. It usually grows about 2 feet tall. The flowers are an excellent source of nectar for pollinators, and the dried seed heads are attractive in winter. The aromatic leaves may be used in teas.

Texas Green Eyes (Berlandiera texana) This Missouri native is one of the longest-blooming species we sell. The yellow flowers show up in June and continue opening throughout the year into September and sometimes into October. The long flowering period allows plenty of time for bees and butterflies to help pollinate the plant. Once the flower petals and disk flowers drop, the remaining stiff, cupped, green calyces surrounding the greenish center disks resemble green eyes, hence the common name.

Prairie Rose (Rosa setigera) Also called climbing rose, prairie rose is most common near woodlands, where it climbs and trails on neighboring shrubs and small trees. Deer browse the twigs and fruit, and a variety of songbirds, as well as greater prairie-chicken, ruffed grouse, and quail, eat the fruits. When it forms dense thickets, prairie rose makes good cover for small birds and mammals. Several insects visit the flowers; others eat the leaves.

Lemon beebalm (Monarda citriodora) is a fragrant, lemon-scented wildflower in the mint family, known for its lavender-pink flowers and ability to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. Native to Missouri and the central and southern U.S., it thrives in full sun and dry, sandy, or rocky soils, and is used for teas, culinary flavoring, and as an insect repellent. It's an annual or biennial that self-seeds readily, making it a low-maintenance addition to gardens.

Blue Bird update.

We have been monitoring our bluebird boxes for the past two months, and it has been an exciting season so far. Out of approximately 31 bluebird eggs counted, 25 successfully developed into chicks and fledged from the nest. We have also had 7 chickadees successfully fledge.

Currently, there are two house wren nests containing a total of 12 eggs, and a third nest is in the process of being built. Watching the progress of each nest and observing the different bird species has been both fascinating and rewarding.

We are only two months into the season and look forward to seeing what the rest of the nesting season brings.

Rough-Leaved Dogwood (Cornus drummondii)
Missouri has five species of dogwood. Rough-leaved is perhaps the most common species. It tolerates drier conditions than other dogwoods. Rough-leaved dogwood is one of Missouri's hardiest shrubs, capable of withstanding cold and drought. The leaves of this thicket-forming species emit a faint odor of sour milk.

Indian Pink (Spigelia marilandica) also called Woodland Pinkroot. This plant has a strong preference for partial to full shade. It does best when situated in soil with plenty of organic material and a decent amount of moisture. There is some flexibility, though; Indian Pink will tolerate more sun if its roots are kept moist and cool. And although it is commonly rated to the southern half of zone 5, it can overwinter in northern zones 4-5 if well protected.

Purple Milkweed (Asclepias purpurascens) The scientific name means “becoming purple”: The flowers start off rather pale and become more intensely purplish as they mature. Like other members of the milkweeds, several insects live off the plant, including the monarch butterfly, the milkweed beetle, milkweed bugs. Other insects and pollinators feed off the flower's nectar.

Eastern Prickly Pear (Opuntia humifusa)

Cacti make us think of the desert southwest, but at least one species is native to Missouri. Eastern prickly pear grows in glades, sand prairies, rocky open hillsides, and other dry, sun-soaked areas. The eastern prickly pear is a low, spreading, succulent cactus growing from fibrous roots.

Ours is blooming now and is loaded with flowers.
