For those wanting to send to your representatives change wording appropriately

Dear Representative Owens,

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding recent proposals advanced by the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability as part of the budget reconciliation process. These proposals would significantly reduce federal retirement benefits by increasing FERS contribution rates, eliminating the FERS annuity supplement, and altering the annuity calculation from a "high-3" to a "high-5" average salary.

As a federal firefighter with 20 years of dedicated service, I strongly oppose these changes. Modifying retirement benefits in the middle of one’s career undermines the basic promise made to public servants who have committed their lives to demanding and hazardous work. Increasing employee contributions by 3.1% while simultaneously reducing benefits is, in effect, a pay cut.

Federal firefighters and law enforcement officers are eligible for retirement as early as age 50, and face mandatory retirement at age 57, due to the strenuous nature of our roles. The FERS annuity supplement is a critical lifeline that bridges the gap until we become eligible for Social Security. Eliminating this supplement would devastate our ability to retire with dignity after decades of physically and emotionally taxing service.

Additionally, the Government Accountability Office has documented that federal firefighting units, particularly within the Department of Defense, have been operating below minimum staffing levels since 2019—largely due to budget constraints. Federal firefighters already work longer hours for less pay compared to our city and state counterparts. Further weakening our retirement security will only exacerbate these challenges and make recruitment and retention even more difficult.

I respectfully urge you to stand with federal firefighters and law enforcement officers by voting against these proposals. Your support is critical to protecting those of us who risk our lives daily in service to our nation.

Sincerely,

Over the past few months we have been trying to push really hard on HR 1235. There seems to be a lot of resistance from our members to support the bill and reach out to their respective reps to support the issue.

This is not far outside the norm when we make a push on a bill. However, it is a bit alarming that a bill with less hours, pay equality and properly calculated retirement is not getting more attention from our members.

We hear our local leaders and even the members talk about being short staffed, our Chiefs won't hire, or we are losing members to the local municipalities because of less hours and better pay. Not to mention people want the retirement fixed. Granted it is not a fix of the current 144hr retirement, but it is a fix, and you are gaining on average around a $3k increase in annual salary if we make this happen. That is not a bad deal for working less hours. Work 24 hours less a pay period and make a little more money? Where is the problem with that?

We can't do this alone. We have given you form letters, that didn't help. Members are more concerned about getting a couple hundred dollars a year to buy uniforms (which doesn't count towards salary or overtime) versus several thousand dollars over the course of a career. The numbers show the attention to Uniforms over HR 1235.

What are the real issues? Legitimately, what are everyone's hang ups? Don't say "it is not going to pass" or "we have been working on the last retirement bill for 20 years, so why bother" or "I am retiring soon, it doesn't matter to me." Your right, attitudes like that won't get us anywhere at all. It takes 10 or 15 minutes to call your rep or talk to their legislative assistant/director and convince them that we need this. Leave it better than we found it, right? That is what we have all been taught coming up through our careers. Well, here is that opportunity. What if the guys retiring in 1998 had that attitude and our Pay Bill never got passed?

We need to pull ourselves together, stand tall as the brotherhood and sisterhood we all claim to be a part of, and put the words, Solidarity, Unity, and Strength, to good use.

Slow and steady wins the race. Not too slow, though. We are nearing 3000 letters. It is baffling, though we should have well over 10k letters by now. Why, you ask, because there is just about that many federal firefighters.

Please share these letters with your department, stay on your members. We have the power to get this done. Share it with family, friends, their family. Let's force Congress to work for us.

Let's take them to 5k. We can handle 5k. Send it to your members, friends, anyone. Let not be the only ones working 72-hour work weeks. CAL FIRE is in the process of getting off of it.

Brothers and Sisters, while your Joint Council was representing you at the most recent Federation of State and Provincial Professional Fire Fighters meeting. The IAFF Govt affairs office briefed them on a new proposed regulation coming out from OSHA. OSHA 1910.156 is an emergency response standard. This standard, especially for Fed Fire has some potential to hold our Agency's feet to the fire making a very labor friendly regulation.

There will be a link in the comments of on the story and in the bio for IG.

Check it out, there will be lots of opportunity for feedback on the different parts of this regulation.

*** ATTENTION ***

HR 1235 Hours and Retirement and the Uniform Allowance letters are the fastest growing letters in the voter voice right now at 2500 each. Let's take them to 5k. We can handle 5k. Send it to your members, friends, anyone. Let not be the only ones working 72hr work weeks. CAL FIRE is in the process of getting off of it.
