𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆…
Highland's history is deeply connected to its natural landscape. When Joseph Wampler first surveyed Highland Township in 1823, today's Livingston Road followed an east-west section line through the area's varied terrain, passing Featherbed Marsh, Pettibone Creek, and a tamarack swamp before rising to the plain surrounding Highland Station.

Tamarack, also known as American larch, is a distinctive tree that thrives in wetland environments. Its wood is valued for its strength and natural resistance to decay, making it a practical choice for certain outdoor applications. These qualities, along with its connection to Highland's natural heritage, make tamarack a meaningful material for this project.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲
The tamarack lumber purchased by Supervisor Hamill will be used in the construction of a new gateway sign welcoming residents and visitors to Historic Highland Station.

The Highland Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is leading this project at the corner of Milford Road and Highland Road (M-59). The gateway sign is a special allowance associated with the Sheetz development and will help create a welcoming entrance to Historic Highland Station.

Tamarack was selected not only for its natural durability but also for the connection it represents to Highland's landscape and history. Its use brings a piece of that natural heritage into a new landmark designed to welcome future generations. As with any outdoor wood installation, appropriate detailing and finishing will help protect the lumber from the elements over time.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁?
Installation is scheduled to begin in mid-October, with the project expected to be completed in December.

The Highland DDA was happy to join today’s celebration as Wildling marked six months in Highland with a new name, a new logo and an exciting next chapter.

What a fun way to celebrate Downtown Days! 💛

Yesterday, the Highland DDA spent the day visiting Downtown Highland restaurants and surprising diners by picking up a few tabs along the way.

A huge thank you to everyone who chose to dine local, support our downtown restaurants, and help make the day such a success. And thank you to our participating restaurants for continuing to make Downtown Highland a place worth gathering, eating, shopping, and spending time.

We loved sharing a few unexpected treats with our community.
