As shared by The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF), “when Columbus Day was founded in 1937, the holiday provided a sense of dignity and self worth in light of the hostility and discrimination many Italian immigrants and Italian Americans faced.” Today, we celebrate and remember the courage and achievements of Italian Americans. For , we will continue to share the inspiring stories of how many of our family owned local businesses began. As shared by Nyc Parks & Recreation, “the Christopher Columbus Statue currently located in D’Auria-Murphy Triangle is the work of Bronx-based Attilio Piccirilli (1866-1945) in 1925. Piccirilli was one of six brothers who were master stone carvers. The family emigrated from Italy in 1887 and established a studio in 1893 at 142nd Street and Willis Avenue. Some notable Piccirilli brothers’ projects include the Maine Monument at Columbus Circle, the lions in front of the New York Public Library, and the statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial.” We encourage all to learn more about Columbus. As featured in the New York Daily News today, Frank Franz, life-long Belmont resident shares, “protecting an accurate history of the past is an obligation each generation must accept. In changing or distorting history, we rob future generations of their birthright to know who they are and how they developed as human beings.”
