💡 Did you know that 1 in 4 U.S. students were chronically absent last year? That means they missed 10 percent or more of the school year—that's almost a full month of classes! And the impact is serious: students who miss too much school fall behind and are less likely to graduate.

Communities In Schools (CIS) offers a unique solution to combat chronic absenteeism. We place a trained, caring adult, known as a site coordinator, inside the school building who works daily to provide support and connection to the resources students need to show up to school prepared and ready to learn.

Communities In Schools (CIS) launched the Being Present Matters campaign to call roll on the 13.9 million students who were absent from school last year. Their reasons why are very real.

A new article from The Atlantic, "The Program That's Turning Schools Around," highlights what Communities In Schools (CIS) has known for nearly 50 years: students can’t learn if their basic needs aren’t met—and relationships make learning possible. The data backs it up: CIS’s integrated student supports help high-risk students improve test scores, graduate at higher rates, and earn more as adults. Inside schools, CIS site coordinators help students navigate everything from housing instability and food insecurity to mental health challenges, so when kids sit down in class, they’re ready to learn.
