What an amazing day! Thank you to everyone that tuned into our event on zoom. A special shoutout to our miracle families who came and shared their stories with us. During a year where everything has to be different and virtual you have still chosen to make an impact for the kids. We as a community have been able to raise $14,788.62 during such a difficult time. Miracle Network Dance Marathon’s slogan this year is “Kids can’t wait!” and because of your dedication they don’t have to.

Support our miracle kid Benjamin by registering for Dance Marathon. Benjamin is 14 years old and has Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis -

When Benjamin was a toddler he began to limp and experienced increasing amounts of pain. His physicians could not diagnose him, and tests were inconclusive—an X-ray revealed a dark spot in his bone marrow, but a follow-up MRI did not provide any answers. Benjamin’s physicians referred him to Duke Children’s, where he was diagnosed with chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis. This rare autoimmune disease causes the body to think that there is an infection in the bone marrow. The body then destroys the healthy bone marrow, leaving empty spots, or lesions, that cause intense pain. Sometimes these lesions are filled in naturally, and sometimes they require medical assistance.
Benjamin and his family maintain this chronic condition through regular visits to Duke Children’s. Benjamin is now in the 9th grade and, despite his illness, is an active and happy teen. He loves science (especially chemistry), being outside with his chickens, and watching the Big Bang Theory. He especially loves his big sister, Colette.
Benjamin and his family also love giving back to Duke Children’s. When asked why, Benjamin said: “I can’t change that I have this disease, but by helping raise funds for other kids it is like God is giving me a do-over. I can make it better for other kids.” Duke Children’s could not achieve its mission of providing world-class care without the generosity of individuals like Benjamin, and without the help of people like you. Thank you for supporting Duke Children’s!

FTK Friday: Learn more about Duke Children's Intensive Care Nursery. Their 67 bed NICU is the largest critical care unit at Duke Hospital. Families, just like yours, know that having a child admitted into an ICU is stressful. Those families, in effort to help manage and decrease that strain, helped design this video so you could understand more about the unit.

Support kids like Elise by registering for Dance Marathon. Elise is 10 years old and has Jacobsen syndrome and Paris-Trousseau syndrome -

Elise’s parents learned she had health problems before she was born, when a prenatal ultrasound showed a kidney defect. But Elise was born with numerous other health issues, and when she was three months old she was diagnosed with two congenital conditions: Jacobsen syndrome and Paris-Trousseau syndrome. This combination of conditions means Elise has numerous health issues including immune deficiency, a blood platelet disorder, hypothyroidism, ADHD, and epilepsy, among others.

Jacobsen syndrome is a lifelong and devastating condition—a quarter of children with it die before their second birthdays. But Elise, now nine, is exceeding her initial prognosis. Elise will always be at risk for hemorrhages because of her blood platelet disorder, but time has resolved some other problems, including two holes in her heart which have closed on their own; Elise’s family also hopes that her epilepsy will resolve during her teen years. The family recently moved to North Carolina from Michigan, and Elise’s parents chose Duke Children’s as her place of care based on research and Duke Children’s world-class reputation. Elise sees many specialists at Duke Children’s, all of whom work to make her as comfortable as possible during procedures and tests.

Elise has had seven surgeries in her young life, but this extroverted and charismatic little girl doesn’t let her medical conditions stop her! Elise is a third grader who loves playing with her dog, Maximus. She also loves singing, basketball, and pancakes—she was a member of IHOP’s first-ever Kid Culinary Team, and traveled to IHOP headquarters to prepare her special recipe of Chocolate Cat Pancakes with Raspberry Custard and “Chocolate Chippies.” Elise also advocates for children’s hospitals that help kids like her. Elise has a full and happy life thanks to surgeries, medical monitoring, and the support of her family and friends.
