History and Our “Why”
The annual Higgins Hog Roast is an event that was first inspired by Phil Detrixhe and Trevor Pool. It was a tradition for friends and family to hunt wild hogs and have a pit barbeque. It was a small group gathering to begin with, but in 2009, the younger generation took it upon themselves to continue the tradition. In light of tragic events, the group thought it was a wond
erful idea to have a hog roast to benefit two very special families. The first Higgins Hog Roast was to honor Joshua Habekott. The community lost Josh in a tragic automobile accident at the early age of 21. In 2010, the tight knit group of friends lost Jeremy Parker to leukemia at the age of 27. That year, the committee decided to give the proceeds of the Higgins Hog Roast to the family of Jeremy for medical and traveling expenses. The following year, the Higgins Hog Roast committee decided to donate to the Joshua Habekott Scholarship fund and CaringBridge in memory of Jeremy Parker. The Joshua Habekott Scholarship fund is a scholarship for an area senior. At the time, CaringBridge was a website that allowed people to easily get updates and offer support and encouragement to those battling illnesses. It was a great way for family and friends to connect with Jeremy and his family during his battle with leukemia. The Higgins Hog Roast has grown to include not only great barbeque, but excellent bands and entertainment along with a co****le tournament. As the attendance of the donation-only event has grown, the Higgins Hog Roast committee has been able to fund four additional scholarships in memory of Josh Habekott and Jeremy Parker. The scholarships are awarded to a graduating senior from schools in Canadian and Follett Texas along with Arnett and Shattuck, Oklahoma. The event not only funds these four scholarships, but it also allows the Higgins Hog Roast to give out multiple scholarships the night of the event to graduating seniors from other schools. Over the years, the Higgins Hog Roast has made it their mission to donate to various other school and community organizations in the surrounding areas. They are huge supporters of anything that involves the area youth. Operation Christmas, Ag programs, Lipscomb County Livestock Show, little league programs, school field trips, various sports programs, and school clubs/organizations are just a few things within the surrounding communities that Higgins Hog Roast are honored to support. Donating to area and local fire departments has also always been a high priority for the Higgins Hog Roast. The Higgins Hog Roast has grown into a benefit that Josh and Jeremy would be proud of. The committee feels that this is a way of keeping Josh and Jeremy’s memory alive. The Higgins Hog Roast committee would like to bestow our eternal gratitude to all personal donators as well as the businesses that make our event possible. This year’s family friendly event will be in Higgins, TX in the city park on June 7th. For more information please contact a Higgins Hog Roast Committee member or send us a message on our page.
