Smithtown KIA Technicians have voted UAW Local 259 - YES!

Today, July 13, 2026, following another instance of union-busting by ownership, the majority of Technicians at this dealership voted to join Local 259.

These Technicians sought to form their union with Local 259 to oppose the lack of wage improvements, lack of paid time off, forever increasing healthcare costs, and insufficient respect from ownership for their skills, knowledge and abilities.

What we find troubling is that Smithtown KIA is the sister facility to Smithtown Toyota. Local 259 has been the collective bargaining representative at Smithtown Toyota for decades. One would think, in light of a functional bargaining relationship already established, Steve Cannata – the boss, would have just simply recognized the union at Smithtown KIA but he did not.

Rather, the boss made the calculated decision to hire a union-buster for $90,000 with the goal of getting a majority of the Technicians to vote NO. The men stayed focused, strong and did not forget as to why they sought to form their union in the first place during the campaign.

These brave workers recognized their bosses’ anti-union spin and prevailed!

Local 259 extends congratulations to our new members and is committed to working towards securing an excellent first-agreement at this facility.

Hey Smithtown KIA invest $$$ in your workers, not union-busters!

Thats right, Steve Cannata, the boss @ SK has decided to pay a union-buster $425.00 per hour to scare and bully his workers to vote NO in an upcoming union vote.

Steve, shame on you and perhaps, if you were a decent boss that treated workers with dignity and respect, your workers would not have formed a union to begin with.

The technicians employed by Smithtown KIA posses skills knowledge and abilities that warrant strong wages, benefits and respect.

These men formed their union with UAW Local 259 because Steve Cannata has failed and refused to deliver that economic security and respect.

Cannata had the chance to recognize the union and bargain collectively but his greed and arrogance has caused him to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a union buster.

Imagine that, investing all that $$$ with no guaranteed outcome in bullying his workers to vote NO rather than making that investment in the very people that make him and his family big $$$.
