This part of history of the Norris school District 160 is remembered and documented for area residents. Yes many sacrifices were made by all in the Hickman area however, this is a part of what was the ‘new’ Norris School District many years ago……. Words from fellow school mate Dr Charles (Fritz) Craft follow:
All....yesterday...Memorial Day...the Hickman Legion Post #105 ( photo 1) had the opportunity to honor the life of LT Ralph Lee Church. Legion members and Boy Scout troops gathered near Ralph’s grave at the Hickman cemetery (photo 2). There they met Ralph’s sister (Alice) and sister-in-law (Denise). Then they traveled out to the Norris High School where they were met by Ralph’s younger brother Kevin, Principal Seggerman, and many other local people. Post Commander Dean Reicks gave a dedication speech describing Ralph’s military service. Then Alice and Kevin unveiled the memorial plaque (photo 3). The Legion Honor Guard gave a three-volley salute and Taps was played (photo 4). A final group picture was taken in front of the Norris memorial wall (photo 5).
It was a special day for the Norris community. The chance to recognize LT Church and make sure his ultimate sacrifice in 1971 is never forgotten. A man who had been previously honored when the Norris High School first opened in 1972, but that tribute had been lost. Paying tribute to a fallen comrade and his family members is a solemn commitment by Post 105 to keep the memory of Ralph alive and to ensure his legacy will endure for future generations. And to help them all understand... the cost of Freedom is not Free!
We will stay in touch with the Church family as plans are developed to conduct another special ceremony for Ralph on Veteran’s Day, 11 November 2026.
