The Range Engineering Council (REC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that was organized exclusively for charitable, scientific and education purposes. The purpose of the REC is to support and facilitate educational programs and activities across the Iron Range that promote awareness of and encourage participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs. The overall vision of REC is to

provide opportunities for area students to learn about STEM fields throughout the region. A few examples of STEM fields include engineering, computer technology, construction trades and health care. The RECs long-term goal is to help facilitate the continuum of programs and activities to expose and excite students in 5-12 grades to STEM.

We had a fantastic last class of Engineering, Cool! at Mesabi East School with Phil McDonald from Iracore teaching the kids about biomedical engineering by designing prosthetic legs and performing angioplasty to remove plaque from an artery. Thank you to our sponsors who made this possible!

Last week in Mesabi East’s Engineering, Cool! class, our 5th & 6th graders dove into the world of Mineral Processing—and things got a little… sparkly ✨

Huge thanks to Jon Maki, Corie Ekholm, Christie Kearney, and Ms. Kayla Owens for leading an afternoon packed with hands-on learning and curiosity.

Who knew that concentrate + water + sand + dish soap + glitter could unlock the secrets of density, magnetism, and flotation!

Last week in Mesabi East’s Engineering, Cool! class, our 5th & 6th graders dove into Mineral Processing!

Huge thanks to Jon Maki, Corie Ekholm, Christie Kearney, and Ms. Kayla Owens for leading an afternoon packed with hands-on learning and curiosity.

Using concentrate + water + sand + dish soap + glitter, we learned about density, magnetism, and flotation.

From swirling mixtures to separating materials like real engineers, these students proved that science isn’t just cool—it’s downright magical.

Surface water was the class topic in Engineering, Cool! at Mesabi East last week. The 5th and 6th graders learned about the water cycle, life as a water molecule, how water use is managed, and how water filters work. Thank you to Tasha Niemi, Jordan Erickson and Christie Kearney for teaching the class!

Thank you United States Steel Corporation for volunteering at our annual STEM Showcase!

We loved seeing so many curious young minds at the Plinko Mining Challenge! ⛏️🪙

USS’s Plinko board decided how tough questions would be — easy, medium, or difficult — and every spin brought smiles, laughter, and some creative answers!

💡Medium question spotlight: “Name one of the lakes that the pellets are shipped across.” Students answered everything from “Twin Lakes!” to “Vermilion!” but most nailed it with the correct answer: Lake Superior!

If the students weren’t sure of the answer, they were directed to a USS volunteer who helped them “study up” to learn more about the steel making process.

🙏🏻Thank you to all the students and teachers who stopped by and played along, making the day a success.

Here’s to the next generation of scientists, engineers, explorers, and problem solvers! 💪⚙️
