I participated in the Perquimans County Schools Town Hall Strategic Planning Meeting last night.

It was awesome. About 80 members of the community showed up. Stakeholders from across the spectrum-- parents, teachers, elected officials, law enforcement and even a few students.

We had great discussions. the event was very well moderated and in the end i think we gave leadership something they can use to map the way forward.

A recurring theme in this campaign has been the idea the we the community have to build the school system we want for our children.

We have to stretch every dollar and make smart choices in the face of enormous fiscal challenges (that's a nice way of saying Raleigh has abandoned us).

This event was a living breathing display of what that looks like.

I was grateful to be a part of it.

I’ve been in both the Navy and, far longer, the Coast Guard, and they both use the expression, “All hands.” It means what it says.

There are no small jobs, at sea or in the air. Everyone relies on everyone else, and the failure of any part threatens the safety of all and the mission.

The way I see it, Perquiman’s County Schools is the same. There are a lot of challenges before us and it will take all hands to meet them.

Our precious children deserve no less.
