Masonic Reflections: The Ruffians

At the heart of the Master Mason degree is the familiar account of the Ruffians. While every Mason remembers the dramatic events of the Legend of Hiram Abif, its purpose is not simply to recount an ancient story. Like all Masonic allegory, it invites reflection on the moral struggles that confront every individual and reminds us that the greatest battles are often fought within ourselves.

Throughout Masonic history, many interpretations have been offered for the Ruffians, but one enduring lesson is that they represent the forces that oppose truth, virtue, and human flourishing. The bulletin ultimately turns inward, suggesting that ignorance, uncontrolled passion, and deliberate wrongdoing are the true enemies a Mason must overcome. These are not distant adversaries but temptations that can undermine character if left unchecked.

Freemasonry teaches that building a worthy life requires constant vigilance. Just as the Temple is protected from those who would profane it, each person is called to guard the "inner lodge" of the mind and heart. Through self-discipline, thoughtful reflection, and an unwavering commitment to what is right, a Mason seeks to preserve his integrity and become a source of strength and encouragement to others.

The legend of the Ruffians endures because it speaks to a timeless truth: the greatest victories are won not by overcoming others, but by mastering ourselves.

Members of Pennsylvania DeMolay, Pennsylvania Rainbow Girls, Prince Hall Grand Council Order of the Knights of Pythagoras of PA, Pennsylvania Job's Daughters and Pennsylvania Ruth Mitchell Tucker Girls Youth Department are encouraged to apply, with certain scholarships specifically for those involved in a Masonic youth group.

Other parties who are eligible for the program include Pennsylvania Masons and their siblings, children, grandchildren or great- grandchildren, or Masonic Children’s Home of Pennsylvania residents and graduates.
