A prayer for 9-11 written by Pastor Zach.

O God who remembers,

We come before You O Lord, on this day remembering September 11, 2001, 25 years later. A day whose aftermath continues to be felt and shapes our lives.

We remember the 2,977 people who lost their lives to the cruel wickedness of this world. We remember and pray for their loved ones who continue to grieve them not just today but every day since.

Lord in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

We acknowledge and remember that the grief and pain of that day belong not only to those who lost loved ones in the immediate aftermath but also to those who witnessed this act of terror.

We pray and lift up to You, O Lord, those who continue to have long-term health issues because of exposure to hazards and toxins. We pray for their continued healing.

Lord in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

We remember that while we saw the worst of humanity on that day, we also saw the best of us. We remember and give thanks for the first responders who rushed in not knowing what they would find but willingly put their lives at risk. We remember and give thanks for the bravery and sacrifice of the passengers on Flight 93. We remember and give thanks for the bravery of all the unsung heroes of that day.

Lord in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray O Lord for Your continued presence in our healing and grieving on this day. That as we remember, we know that You grieve, You remember with us, and every name is remembered by You. Lord, we remember that You have not left us and continue to call us into Your arms of love. We pray for the day when You will wipe away every tear and heal every heart.

In the name of Jesus Christ, who is from everlasting to everlasting. Amen.

On the second Sunday of the month, Herndon UMC is offering an opportunity to explore more about how United Methodists live out core Christian beliefs. Whether this is your first Sunday or you have been coming for years, you are welcome to bring snacks and drinks to Room 105 after worship and get to know the UMC and some church leaders a little better, and learn more about what it means to be a part of the Herndon UMC church family.

This month’s topic is "Our Purpose and Identity." United Methodists are rooted in the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Faith is lived out through love of God and neighbor. Our discussion questions invite us to explore our roles individually and collectively.

Thanks to Resource UMC for The United Methodist Conversation Guide for New Members.

All are welcome. Sunday, June 14 after worship (around 11:15 am).

A prayer for Memorial Day 2026:

Loving God, this Memorial Day we pause to remember those who gave their lives in service to others. We hold their memory close with great gratitude, not rushing past the cost of that sacrifice.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Sustaining God, be near to those who grieve lives lost and stories unfinished, those who carry their absence each day. For spouses holding things together, for children growing up in absence, for parents who worry and wait, wrap them with your grace.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Restoring God, we long for a world where peace is not fragile or distant. Show us how to be part of that work in the ways we speak, listen, and interact with one another. Heal what is broken in our world and in us. Give wisdom to leaders, courage to peacemakers, and a steady hope for us that your goodness is still at work.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayers. Amen.
