Our March meeting brought a breath of spring and a boost of positivity as we welcomed Penny Halpern as our guest speaker. Below is a photo of Penny at the podium, along with key details about her topic: the Herndon Village Network (HVN).
Penny’s warm and engaging style made her story especially enjoyable. She spoke about her life as a long time Herndon resident and her many years of community service. Today, she serves as President of the HVN Board, guiding a team of more than a dozen who help keep the organization running smoothly. (The team is composed of board members, media volunteers, and rides coordinators.) Some of our own club members have served as HVN drivers.
HVN is a membership based service with a simple, one time registration fee. Herndon residents 55 and older who live in 20170 or select areas of 20171 can join and receive free rides to places like medical appointments, grocery stores, restaurants, and more.
If you’d like to learn more about HVN, take a look at the links below.

A big THANKS to Penny for a wonderful presentation and for serving our community.

Happy Women’s History Month!
Today we remember two former Herndon Fortnightly Club Members.
First is Virginia Castleman, who was a founding Club member and became the initial librarian of the club’s library, the first lending library in Fairfax County.
Next is Elisabeth Leonhardt who was part of the “Sacred Twenty,” the Navy’s first group of nurses. She ultimately became the Chief Nurse of the United States Navy. After retiring in the late 1920s, she returned to Herndon, joined the Herndon Fortnightly Club, serving as a club officer and donating many books to the library.

Valentine’s Day wishes to our community …
💖💞💗We Love our Town 💗💞💖
We want to send our heartfelt 💜🫶💗 sentiments to our community for Happy Valentine’s Day this Saturday!
Going into this Valentine’s weekend, we celebrate the kindness, connection, and compassion that make our town such a special place to call home. For this Valentine’s post, we connect community love with community volunteerism by highlighting an “early Valentine” from us in December 2025. On Saturday Dec 6, 2025, our club participated in the Holiday Homes Tour of Herndon (website: https://www.holidayhomestourofherndon.org/).
Our club member Mary B., for MANY years, has been a key committee member in the Town’s homes tour organization. On the day of the homes tour, our club formed two groups of volunteers with Mary B. and Yvonne J. leading the effort within our club. The two groups are pictured below. We are thankful for the warmth and generosity of Bernadette and Al, on Van Buren St, who shared their historic home with us for the tour.

May this Valentine’s Day remind us all that love isn’t only found in grand gestures, but in the warmth of a smile, a helping hand, and the friendships that brighten our days. We wish each of you moments of joy, gratitude, and connection as you celebrate in your own meaningful way. With heartfelt appreciation, The Herndon Fortnightly Club
