Great leaders aren’t defined by the easy years. They're defined by how they proceed when things get tough.

For more than 50 years, Steve Doty has brought that determination to his family business and the concrete masonry industry.

As the third-generation leader of Peerless Block & Brick Co., Steve helped guide the company through periods of growth and significant adversity. Along the way, he also gave his time and leadership to the industry, including serving as NCMA chair and advocating for greater collaboration and investment in masonry’s future.

His philosophy says it simply: “Efforts equal results.”

How do you make an iconic view safer — without ruining the picture-perfect moment?

Decades of use had left the observation area at Dante’s View in Death Valley National Park in need of a rebuild. The National Park Service needed a solution that could help stabilize the platform, improve visitor safety and feel at home in the surrounding landscape.

The solution? A segmental retaining wall system.

Weathered, natural-looking Mosaic SRWs were installed in a serpentine design that follows the landscape and incorporates two overlooks extending over the hilltop. Finished with a cement cap and railing, the new observation area is ready to safely welcome visitors for many years to come.

For more than four decades, Jeff Speck, P.E., has put his engineering expertise to work advancing the concrete masonry industry — and helping others advance with it.

His contributions span fire-rated concrete masonry, lightweight concrete research, engineering education and technical leadership.

But perhaps the clearest measure of Jeff’s impact is how consistently he showed up for this industry. For more than 25 years, he served an extraordinary 177 association committee terms.

Through it all, Jeff shared what he knew, mentored others and helped build the technical foundation future generations can continue to build upon.
