A word from the Outgoing President
I’m XOs mom. I’ve volunteered with the Scouts, Band & PTA over the years, all in support of what the boy loves doing. I’m STILL volunteering in my old positions with his scout troop even though he’s outgrown it.
I can’t do that here. Once he graduates in June, I can’t officially be a booster anymore. Someone else has to step up—at lease four someone elses have to step up. We were short handed this year, and only one of our volunteers is able to stay on next year because his cadets aren't graduating out of the program.
I’m going to ask you, is your cadet on the Drill Team? Color Guard? Air Rifle? Are they on more than one of those teams? From what I’ve seen over the past four years, if they are on ANY of those teams, they are on a leadership track, and the more of those teams that they are on, the higher in leadership they are going to rise.
They need you to support them through this. They obviously love the program, and are dedicating themselves to learning all sorts of really neat stuff that most kids never get to learn. They WANT to do this, but again, they need your support. They need you to be involved in the extremely unique culture that is Hornet Battalion, so that you understand why they spend so much time there. You’ll also end up adopting other cadets / being adopted along the way by other cadets who also need you.
We are a tax deductible organization, which I’m sure you all realize encourages donations. Donations like the money for the Thanksgiving Turkey Drive, money straight into our coffers from the Herndon Moose Lodge, etc. We then turn around and fund food for field meets, help with field trips, and pretty much anything that Captain and Chief ask for that benefits the unit as a whole. The bigger cash donors will likely go away if we lose our tax deductible status, making it really, REALLY hard to raise money again. We did really well this year thanks to the larger donors.
You volunteering will be good for everyone. Please step up - grab a parent friend if you have one who has cadet. Come to the meetings. Don’t let the unit lose their tax deductible donation funnel.
