Eastern Custer County Ambulance District Update
The Eastern Custer County Ambulance District reached an important milestone on June 2, 2026, when district voters approved its formation by a vote of 529 to 131. This means more than 80% of voters supported the creation of the district, demonstrating strong community support for developing a sustainable ambulance service for eastern Custer County.
The formation of the district creates an opportunity for local residents to guide the future of emergency medical services through locally elected leadership and long-term planning. Just as communities invest in schools, roads, fire protection, and other essential services, a dedicated ambulance district helps establish a framework for maintaining emergency medical services as a critical piece of community infrastructure. Strong EMS systems not only serve residents during emergencies but also contribute to the health, safety, and vitality of the broader community.
With the district now established, attention turns toward building a strong foundation for the future. While the initial Board of Directors will ultimately make decisions regarding the district's operations, a dedicated group of community members has already begun the important work of gathering information, conducting research, and assessing the needs of the district's service area.
Approximately 20 individuals are currently participating in various working groups and projects. These efforts include collecting data, evaluating resources, researching operational models, and assembling information that will help the future Board of Directors make informed decisions. No decisions have been made regarding how the district will ultimately operate. Rather, these volunteer-led efforts are focused on preparing information and materials that will assist the Board as it begins its work.
Community involvement continues to be an important part of this process. Several individuals interested in serving on the initial Board of Directors are currently circulating nominating petitions, and there is still time for additional candidates to participate. Those who can bring leadership, professional experience, community knowledge, or a commitment to public service are encouraged to consider becoming involved.
The next public meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hermosa Masonic Hall, located behind the HAHA Museum in Hermosa. Community members are encouraged to attend, learn about ongoing projects, ask questions, and meet others who are contributing their time and talents to this important effort.
The successful formation of the district was only the first step. The work now underway represents a collaborative effort to provide future board members with the tools, information, and community support necessary to build a strong and sustainable ambulance district. The overwhelming support shown by voters demonstrates what can be accomplished when a community comes together around a shared goal.
