MREs anyone? I love getting to work with "themes" when I go into schools. Mrs. Diane is exploring the 250 years of freedom with her summer students. While they are learning about different projects offered through 4-H each week when I'm there, I try to tie in Mrs. Diane's theme.

Tuesday's project area was foods/nutrition. Students learned what soldiers ate during deployment through each of the war eras. They sampled canned meat and with the help of Coach Wheeler, they were able to explore the contents of some MREs and sample them. We talked about the nutrient deficiencies soldiers faced as well.

The Hickory County Youth Poultry & Rabbit show was this evening. We had 20 youth attend this year.

Thanks to the amazing judges (Austin Noah, poultry; and Jenna Kuttenkuler, rabbits); Jocelyn Lewton Wheeler (and family) for help with the event and clean up; and Chris and Matthew for helping with all the things in between!

4-H State Congress was last week on the MU campus. This is a 2 night trip that allows the youth the opportunity to experience dorm life, network, vote for the Board of Directors and Regional Representatives. The youth take part in workshops, service learning projects, campus tours, and wrap it all up with sand volleyball and a dance.

Summer school students learned about germs today. We used germ simulation lotion and a blacklight to see how easily germs are spread. Pictured: my phone case after I grabbed it with the simulator and a student's arm that I touched with my "germy" hands. All three groups decided germ spreading is gross 😂

Looking for a fun, hands-on experience for youth this summer? Come learn the skills of the homestead!

During this 5-day mini camp, youth will explore practical skills through hands-on activities including:
🌱 Gardening & planting seeds
🐓 Learning about poultry and eggs
🍞 Baking homemade bread & simple food preservation
🧵 Sewing basic projects
🕯️ Making soap and candles

Youth will learn new skills, create projects, and take home items they make throughout the week!

Youth enrolled in outdoor adventures met today. They learned how to put a tent up and talked about "leave no trace" at camp sites.
