π FIRE PREVENTION WEEK DAY 5: Are your outlets overloaded? π
With smartphones, laptops, smart TVs, and appliances, our homes plug in more devices than ever before. But overloading your electrical outlets is a leading cause of home electrical fires.
Take 2 minutes today to do a quick "plug audit" around your house:
π
ββοΈ One high-power appliance per outlet: Big appliances like microwaves, refrigerators, space heaters, and coffee makers should always be plugged directly into a wall outletβnever a power strip or extension cord.
π« Extension cords are temporary: Extension cords are not meant for permanent use. If you are relying on them long-term, it's time to add more wall outlets.
π₯΅ Feel your outlets: Carefully feel your outlet faceplates. If they feel hot to the touch, smell warm, or show discoloration, unplug everything immediately and call an electrician.
β‘ Safety Rule: Power strips add extra plugs, but they do not increase the amount of power the wall outlet can handle!
Go check your living room or office setup right now. Is it time to unplug a few things? Let us know below! π
