Grant County in the spotlight today.

Today we are highlighting Grant County in western Minnesota. Established in 1868 and formally organized in 1874, Grant County was named after Ulysses S. Grant, the Union Army General during the Civil War and United States President from 1869 to 1877. The county has 16 townships and its county seat is Elbow Lake.

Another Grant County settlement is Wendell, located in the northern part of the county. This view of Wendell includes the railroad station and several grain elevators, with a train pulling in. Many towns in this area were established by the railroads as convenient waystations and depots. Explore more counties in MDL’s regional map collection at z.umn.edu/MDLRegionalMaps.
