The Dix-Day Post
Dix-Day Post 1281 was founded in 1935 to serve veterans and their families in the City of Herington and surrounding communities. The Post is named in honor of Peter M. “Pete” Dix and Walter N. Day.
Pete Dix died on the first day of fighting at the battle of Santiago de Cube during the war with Spain on 24 June 1898, while serving with Troop K First Regular Cavalry. Pete Dix was buried in Cuba by soldiers from his Troop, and today there is a memorial to Pete Dix in Arlington National Cemetery.
Walter Day was a railroad switchman that volunteered in May of 1917 to help put the French railway systems back in order during WWI. He died in France in January 1919 from complications of Appendicitis resulting from the dreaded “grippe” or “Spanish influenza”. In 1919, Olive Street in Herington was renamed Day Street by city ordinance in honor of Walter Day. After WWI, the body of Walter Day was returned to Herington, and he was laid to rest on 24 February 1921.
