It’s a hard day at HAR. Commander passed away this morning. He was 38 years old and we are proud to have given him a home for his final 5 years of life. He was the horse that everyone fell in love with. His face was gray. His mouth only had a few pieces of teeth. His body was worn out. And his hair was curly. But in our eyes, he was the most beautiful horse!

Here’s a tribute from one of our caring volunteers.
A trainer at Horse’n Around once told me that we don’t find the horse, the horse finds us.
Commander, the oldest horse at HAR, found me three years ago and my life instantly changed. My heart and soul were filled with love and joy as I gained this old boy’s trust and friendship. A few years ago Commander’s brother Major moved on to the other side. Commander stayed behind. God had other plans for this sweet boy. And that plan was to bring happiness and peace to everyone who met him. He touched all of our hearts. His beautiful brown eyes penetrated my heart, his companionship over the last three years filled me with love and kept me afloat. He let me hug him and sing to him; he let me brush him and give him cookies and apple sauce. He listened to all my stories and even nodded in response. I think he was just being polite!
Old boy do you know how much joy you brought me and all of us? You were the king of my heart, my best friend, the first horse I ever slowed down to love and spend time with. What a gift you were to me and will always be.
You’re finally free, young and full of life with your beautiful Major. Whoop it up in the pastures above Commander. You will never be forgotten.
