QUICK UPDATE AND 2025 AMAZON WISHLIST REQUEST

Hey! I bet you thought we dropped our page.

Not a chance! We’ve just been off this particular social media spot.

How about a quick catch-up:

· 2025 marks the 7th year back in the business of providing a camping experience for girls between the age of 8 and 14. This year our program will run from July 18-26 and we are expecting about 60 girls.

· Connie Stine stepped down as our Camp Director last year after several years of great work. We have a new Camp Director, Alum Jay Green who has a rich history with GQ.

· We have 2 websites now—our new Camp Oh-Neh-Tah website www.campohnehtah.com, and our main website www.girlsquest.org. Check out our sites for more info on Connie and Jay as well as great camp info and pics.

· We have upped our “Registration” game for campers and staff. Last year we started using Campminder, a platform that has really streamlined a lot of processes for us and improved communications with campers, parents and staff.

Besides getting you caught up on a few things, we are reaching out to you to request your help in purchasing some things we need to run a successful camp program. We have identified items sold by Amazon that we need for camp and have created an Amazon Camp Oh-Neh-Tah Wishlist (Amazon.com) . We’d appreciate you reviewing the Wishlist and selecting an item or items that will help enhance the camp experience. The Wishlist items support activities from games to arts and crafts. It also has snacks and office and kitchen supplies. The cost of these items range from $5.99 to $239.99. So I’m sure there’s something on the Wishlist that fits your “giving” budget. If you can only buy one item it will be helpful.

I hope after reviewing our camp website, www.campohnehtah.com , you will feel motivated to go to our Amazon Wishlist (Amazon.com) and buy one or more items to support our summer camp program. We hope to receive enough items to ensure girls have the supplies needed to be creative and engaged.

If you prefer to help GQ in another way or in addition to the Amazon Wishlist (Amazon.com), feel free to mail a donation check, payable to “Girls Quest”, to Florence Danforth-Meyer, Girls Quest Treasurer, 132A East 65th St, 6A, NY, NY 10065.

Thank you in advance for supporting GQ. The items received from the Amazon Camp Oh-Neh-Tah Wishlist (Amazon.com) will make a difference in the camp experience of the young girls who will have a chance to get away to the nurturing, educational, nature sensitive and fun environment of Camp Oh-Neh-Tah.

Before we end this post, we just want to let you know that if you are an Alum, please consider coming back to Camp Oh-Neh-Tah for the Alumnae Family Weekend. It will be held August 1-3. Come back to camp, reminisce, go swimming or boating on Silver Lake and/or take a climb up Mt. Zoar. And of course, sing your favorite camp songs around the fire under the moon light.

In our next post we’ll share info about how you can sign up for the Alumnae Family Weekend.

A good time will be had by all!!

So Save the Date and we hope to see you there!!

UPDATE AND CAMPER RECRUITING FOR CAMP 2023

WHAT!!! A post from Girls Quest?

YEP! And you thought we forgot about you.

Yes, we know it’s been a while. So sorry for being MIA (Missing in Action).

Well, let’s get you caught up on a few things……GQ had a successful Camp 2021 and Camp 2022 at Camp Oh-Neh-Tah (see images in Collage). The girls who attended had a lovely time and a break from home. Also, last year we hosted Camp Sojourner, a group from Philadelphia that’s led by Alisha Berry, an Alum from GVF. Camp Sojourner at Camp Oh-Neh-Tah, which was held from July 31-August 6, went very well. So much so that they will be returning this summer in late July for another session.

Getting back to GQ….. for Camp 2021, we had a COVID-free session, and for Camp 2022, we had one case that was identified early and addressed. Unfortunately, Camp 2022 was not as well attended as Camp 2021. We believe our vaccination requirement reduced our pool of eligible girls.

So for Camp 2023, which will run from July 14-22, we will not have a vaccination requirement. But we will have all the NPIs (Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions) in place that helped us control COVID during the summers of 2021 and 2022.

Because we don’t want a repeat of 2022 in regard to attendance, and the number of registered girls for Camp 2023 is below our goal at the moment, we are reaching out to our network to help us recruit girls. We want as many girls as possible to enjoy the Camp Oh-Neh-Tah experience. To that end, we are asking you to please share the attached GQ Camper Flyer with anyone who might be interested in attending camp or sending their daughter (age 8 to 14). We’d also appreciate you posting the Flyer somewhere where it might be seen by interested girls or parents.

Since camp starts July 14, time is tight. So, if someone is interested, they have to get in contact with our Registrar ASAP. Contact info is on the Flyer and can be found on our website http://www.girlsquest.org You all know the population we serve, so if money is a problem, we are currently discussing providing scholarships. We don't want money to be a deterrent to a young girl whose family really can't afford the nominal Camp Fee.

We appreciate any help you can provide to get the word out. BIG THANKS!

While we have your attention, if you are an Alum, please consider coming back to Camp Oh-Neh-Tah for the Alumnae Family Weekend. It will be held August 11-13. Come back to camp, reminisce, go swimming or boating on Silver Lake, and/or take a climb up Mt. Zoar. And, of course, sing your favorite camp songs around the fire under the moonlight.

We’ll be sure to post more info about how you sign up for the Alumnae Family Weekend when we get closer to the date.

A good time will be had by all!!

So Save the Date, and we hope to see you there!!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Girls Quest wishes you and your loved ones a happy and wonderful Thanksgiving!

Now is one of those times when we’d like to give thanks to all who have supported Girls Quest in the past. A special “Thanks” goes out to those who helped us make Camp 2021 a reality and success.

ORIENTATION AND OFF TO CAMP

On Friday, July 16 on 151 W. 145th St in Harlem in front of Street Corner Resources (a non-profit that provides employment, education and training services to teenagers and young adults), Shanny Herrera, our Recruiter/Registrar, met six Girls Quest (GQ) Camp Staffers/Volunteers early in the morning to get ready for camp departure. Those volunteers (Eva Lewandowski and her son Alex, Jennella Green, Aja Peoples, Stephani Lopez, Kishouna Landais) (see image) set-up Check-in tables and our large Girls Quest sign in preparation to greet 26 girls and their parents/guardians due to arrive between 7:00am and 7:30 am. These girls (mostly excited, a few were anxious) hailed from all five NYC boroughs and Middletown.

All the girls arrived with their required paperwork which led to a smooth check-in process and the timely 8:30am departure of two Trailways buses filled with girls sitting socially distanced to follow CDC guidelines (see images). The girls were on their way to Camp Oh-Neh-Tah. For “Returners” who attended Camp 2019, they knew what to expect. But for many of the girls, they were starting a new adventure because this would be their first visit to Camp Oh-Neh-Tah.

One of the reasons we think the Check-in process went so well is because parents/guardians and campers were well briefed on what was required to attend Camp 2021. Most had attended GQ’s first Zoom Orientation held on June 5. Orientation was led by Connie Stine, our Camp Director, with the support of some camp staff members (Stephani Lopez, Aja Peoples, Kishouna Landais, Claudia Campbell). Those who couldn’t make the Orientation received a call from Connie to cover the key points of the session.

The one hour Orientation provided campers and their parents/guardians with a “Camp Tour” via pictures, since most had never seen Camp Oh-Neh-Tah. With the Camp Tour, everyone got a sense of our camp’s layout and a feel of the type of activities held at camp. The Camp Tour was followed by an interactive nature activity which provided more insights to camp. Next came the most important part of the Orientation, a detailed review/discussion of the NPIs (Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions) that would be put in place to protect campers and staff. During this discussion Connie went over the Pre-Camp NPIs that would be required (vaccinations, quarantining, testing) and some of the NPIs that would be in place at camp (face masks, social distancing (with the assistance of pool noodles), rapid testing, daily temperature checks, handwashing, building sanitation, reduced number of girls/counselors per cabin, safe camp activities). The Orientation wrapped up with a Q&A for the parents/guardians and a Scavenger Hunt for the girls in a separate breakout room.

The Orientation was well attended and received positive feedback from the parents/guardians. Connie shared that she believes it helped them feel more comfortable about letting their girls go away to camp during a pandemic. The information shared clearly showed the effort being made to keep their loved ones safe. Connie said that because parents/guardians are an integral part of the Camp Community, she believes an Orientation should always be presented pre-camp in the future.

Now let’s get back to the girls on the 2 buses……….After about a two-and-a-half-hour drive, they feel the bus slow down. Most look out of the window and see the Camp Oh-Neh-Tah sign (see image). The noise levels on both buses increase as sounds of “We’re here!” ring through the buses. Those girls who were glued to their devices suddenly look up and out of the window.

Returners are smiling seeing familiar things and are super happy because they know what the next few days will be like. They can’t wait to get off the bus. Some Newbies heard about camp on the ride up from Returners sharing their 2019 experience. So they are excited to have those same experiences. Other Newbies stayed to themselves and their device or book. At this point they don’t know what’s in store for them. Some are hoping to have a good time. Some hope it’s easy to meet a friend so they’re not by themselves. And let’s face it, some are already looking forward to getting back on the bus to return home. (By the way, the girls in this category typically have the greatest amount of fun and are crying at the end because they don’t want to go home.)

Wondering what happens next for the 26 girls on the bus? Stay tuned for our next post.

SPOTLIGHT ON GQ RECRUITER/REGISTRAR SHANNY HERRERA

Let’s say Carol is at an event and the meal is being served. She’s in the serving line and she presents her plate to the young man serving roasted brussels sprouts with bacon, dried cherries and crunchy walnuts. With a smile she asks for a “No Thank You Serving”. The young man, while politely returning her smile, gives Carol a confused look.

OK Alums, what is Carol asking for?

If you said she’s asking for a very small serving so she can just taste the brussels sprouts dish, you are correct. Congrats!

At Camp On-Neh-Tah campers are encouraged to request a “No Thank You Serving” for food items they don’t typically eat. This request enables the girls to step out of their comfort zones and try new foods without wasting food.

Shanny Herrera, our new Recruiter/Registrar, shared that during her camping days at Camp Oh-Neh-Tah, “No Thank You Servings” exposed her to new vegetables that she grew to love. So much so that when she got back to NYC, she asked her mother to buy and serve those vegetables at home.

Besides discovering new vegetables, Shanny discovered herself at camp. Free of the bullying and teasing she experienced in her neighborhood and at school, and surrounded by staff that truly cared about her and “saw her inner soul”, Shanny said she came out of her shell. She began to feel good about herself and see herself through a different lens. Her self-confidence grew, she became more outgoing and her friendships with fellow campers blossomed. Shanny shared that she can still remember that feeling of believing she could do anything. (See image of campers—that’s Shanny below the “me”.)

Speaking of memories, Shanny said her fondest memory of Camp Oh-Neh-Tah, which she attended from age 9 to 13, was the Mt. Zoar multi-day hike she took her last summer at camp. The beauty, the challenge, the independence, the responsibilities and the sense of accomplishment that came with successfully executing camping tasks, strengthened her self-confidence. This self-confidence grew steadily over the 5 full summers she spent at camp. By the way, Shanny attended camp in the days when girls could be at Camp Oh-Neh-Tah from June to August.

To this day, Shanny still loves camping. She shared that she goes camping with other couples and the experience of pitching a tent and being outdoors in fresh air by the water, brings to mind visions of Camp Oh-Neh-Tah and her 13th birthday that she celebrated on Mt. Zoar.

When asked why she decided to take on the Recruiter/Registrar role, Shanny said it was a natural next step on the ladder of getting reengaged with GQ. This reengagement process started with attending Annual Alumnae Weekends with her sister Selina, when the weekends were reborn in 2016. (Selina attended camp with Shanny in the late 70’s early 80’s.) From attending Annual Alumnae Weekends, she got involved with CampQUEST@Home and CampQUEST@Home Year-Round. By then she was committed to helping the GQ mission anyway possible.

With her background in being an advocate for and working with youth as the Program Director with the NYC Division Youth Community Development, The Reading Team and the Bell Foundation, and the network she has developed in this space over the years, Shanny said she felt that she could bring value and contribute to the effort of finding girls to participate in GQ programs.

Shanny explained that so many girls from the inner-city never get the chance to leave the city to participate in a program like SEED and explore a different environment like Camp Oh-Neh-Tah—one that’s so wide open and green and freeing. She said this experience can change your perspective on life forever and give you that extra strength to persevere and confront obstacles. Motivated by maximizing the number of girls being given this opportunity to experience what she experienced when she attended camp, keeps Shanny active in the Recruiting/Registrar role as she juggles her full time job, her role as the Executive Director of the Bronx Chapter of the National Action Network and her junior sportswear line-Get Money Girl (getmoneygirl.com) that she recently relaunched.

As a camper who initially didn’t look forward to camp, but changed to one who couldn’t wait for camp to start, especially once she became a Senior Camper, Shanny feels honored to be in a position that allows her to give back to GQ. She proudly shared that GQ changed the trajectory of her life and that she hopes the girls she recruits and registers for camp will be blessed with the same favor.

Well GQ feels blessed to have Shanny’s support with recruiting and registration. Picking up the reins and filling this critical role, that is more challenging during a pandemic, took an enormous weight off our Camp Director, Connie Stine. (See image of Shanny and Connie.) Considering the extra challenges Connie faces this year with numerous protocols that have to be in place to keep campers and staff healthy and safe, Shanny’s effort is truly truly appreciated.

STAFFING CAMP 2021, CAMP 2021 JUNE 5 ORIENTATION AND SAVE THE DATE

HELP!!!!!!! URGENT!!!!!!!

We are in dire need for Staffing to help us run a successful Camp 2021. Currently we have to fill the following positions:
• Cabin Counselors—we need 6 more
• Sports Specialist
• Kitchen Workers—we need 3 and unlike the minimum 18 year old age requirement for Staff members, Kitchen Workers minimum age is 16

If you are a frequent reader of our page, you know the dates of camp this summer—July 16-26. So in “camp time”, that’s right around the corner and close enough that our staffing situation is flashing URGENT!

Cabin Counselors drive how many girls we can accommodate at camp. Consequently not having enough Cabin Counselors will limit how many girls we can accept into the program. A cabin’s camper vs Cabin Counselor ratio is not flexible. This means that if we can’t hire enough Cabin Counselors, we may have to turn some girls away. And after the past year these girls have had being stuck at home due to the pandemic, it will break our hearts to say “We can’t accept you into the program” because of staffing.

So if you or someone you know, would like to be a staffer at Camp Oh-Neh-Tah, please review the flyer above and take action. You can discover more details about the positions by going to our website, www.girlsquest.org and tap on the Join Our Summer Staff tab. There, under Open Positions, you will find short descriptions of each position and you can download the Full Job Description.

Those of you who are Alumnae, you know how meaningful and impactful time at Camp Oh-Neh-Tah can be. Others may have attended a different camp or maybe you simply heard how great camp can be. We hope you make every effort to HELP us with our staffing challenge so we can offer this experience to more girls this summer.

Camp 2021 Orientation

The next CampQUEST@Home Year-Round Workshop is scheduled for June 5, 2021. Connie Stine, our Camp Director, is going to use that Zoom time to conduct a mandatory Camp 2021 Orientation for parents, guardians and campers. This will be the first time we have offered an Orientation and we thank Zoom technology for making it possible.

Here’s a snapshot of what the 45 minute Orientation will cover:
• Since most parents, guardians and some 2021 campers have never been to Camp Oh-Neh-Tah, they will be treated to a “pictures” tour of camp. When Connie was at camp in May, she squeaked out the time to take pictures that could be used to bring the beauty of camp into the homes of the Orientation participants. The pictures also explore some of the activities of the program.
• Borrowing from a typical CampQUEST@Home Year-Round Workshop, there will be a Nature Awareness interactive activity for participants.
• Parents’/Guardians’ concerns about the safety of this summer’s camp experience will be addressed by reviewing the NPIs (Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions) that will be in place during the 10 day program. Connie will also review the critical pre-camp protocols that will be required.
• For the last part of the Orientation, parents/guardians will participate in a Q & A that will give them an opportunity to get any questions answered that were not already covered in previous conversations with Connie or the Registrar, Shanny Herrera, or covered in the Orientation thus far. While the Q & A session is going on for the adults, the girls will engage in one of their favorite activities. At the moment we’re keeping the activity a secret. But here’s a hint…..it’s connected to getting ready for camp.

Connie will be conducting this mandatory Orientation with the help of three Camp 2021 Staffers/Alum—Stephanie Lopez (Assistant Camp Director), Aja Peoples (Unit Leader) and Kisha Landis (Unit Leader). Their hope is that the Orientation will pre-handle questions about Camp Oh-Neh-Tah, the program and the safety protocols that will be in place; and provide a little learning and fun.

SAVE THE DATE

The 2021 Annual Alumnae Family Weekend will be held at Camp Oh-Neh-Tah on July 31-August 1. We’re looking forward to hosting Alumnae, family and friends once again. Details about the weekend will be communicated soon, so keep an eye out on this page and Connie’s page.

ANNOUNCING CAMP 2021 AND THE GIRLS QUEST PLEDGE

HAPPY MAY!

The weather is warming. Flowers are blooming at Camp Oh-Neh-Tah (see image). Summer is around the corner. And things are slowly getting back to normal. And part of a normal summer is SUMMER CAMP!

We are pleased to formally announce that Girls Quest will be welcoming girls back to Camp Oh-Neh-Tah this summer for a 10 day program.

That’s right. WE’RE BACK!

Camp will run from Friday, July 16 to Monday, July 26. Staff training will be conducted at Camp from Thursday, July 8 to Thursday, July 15. And speaking of staff, we are actively recruiting for staff. Check out our website www.girlsquest.org under the Join Our Summer Staff page to see the available positions. If interested, contact Connie Stine, our Camp Director, at [email protected] to apply.

Although we are formally announcing camp now, we have been recruiting for campers and staff since March when the Board voted to move forward with resident camp. We decided to wait to tell the Girls Quest Facebook community until we were absolutely sure Camp was on and we could meet all the standards outside agencies were requiring to operate a safe and healthy camp. The final guidelines came out and we are confident that we can meet them. YAH!

Our camper recruiting effort thus far has focused on girls who participated in Camp 2019, CampQUEST@Home, and/or CampQuest@Home Year Round. The parents/guardians of these girls have been contacted directly by Ms. Connie Stine, our Camp Director, or Ms. Shanny Herrera, our Registrar, to ascertain interest in participating in Camp 2021. Parents/Guardians of girls 8-14 years of age who have never participated in a Girls Quest program should reach out to our Registrar, Ms. Shanny Herrera at [email protected] to request Registration information.

Connie Stine is at Camp now getting things ready for July (see image). We so appreciate her dedication and commitment to our mission and drive to make Camp happen this year. Major “Thank Yous” go out to Connie.

We are super excited to be back in the camping business again and to be ramping up to host girls at Camp Oh-Neh-Tah this July!

Girls Quest Pledge

Alumnae, now in our last post we challenged your memory and asked you if you remembered the words to the Girls Quest Camp Pledge. We promised to send you the words in our next post, so here you go….

I pledge myself to uphold the ideals of Camp Oh-Neh-Tah, as symbolized by the council fire, representing truth, beauty, courage and love.

I will win without boasting, lose without excusing, cooperating with my fellow campers in all activities, so I may carry away with me the gifts of the Great Spirit.

According to Connie, the Pledge has been amended from time to time over the past 80 years. So if your memory of the words don’t match perfectly, and you missed a word here and there, chock it up to someone changing the words. This way you can tell yourself you remembered it correctly. Now if you are an older Alum and you missed a bunch of words and you honestly were nowhere near what’s written above, then blame old age and the memory that’s not what it used to be. Such is life! And if you are a younger Alum, you could blame it on the fact that you haven’t said the Pledge in a while. (Or except the possibility that your memory isn’t that great either.)

March 27 CAMPQUEST@HOME YEAR-ROUND WORKSHOP FEEDBACK

How would you answer the following questions?
Name a QUALITY that—
- Comes from within?
- Can be seen?
- You have learned?

Well, the girls who participated in the March 27 CampQUEST@Home Year-Round Workshop “Spring Into Courage” introduced themselves by answering these questions that tie into the February 6 Workshop that addressed Self-Love. It was a great way to kick off the Workshop and allowed the girls to learn a little more about each other.

The Gratitude Tree, which has been “Springafied” (yes this is a real word), is the first activity that uses the nature component of the Workshop—birds. The answers to the question “Share an Opportunity you are Grateful for”, was written on red, blue, and yellow birds that Connie Stine, our Camp Director and Workshop leader, posted on the Gratitude Tree (see Image). Here are some of the answers from the girls:
-To be happy and have good grades
-To travel to see family
-To participate in CampQUEST@Home

QUESTCraft, which followed the Gratitude Tree activity, kept the birds focus going as the girls embarked on creating a Bird Feeder. Connie mailed the girls a bird feeder kit complete with felt bird stickers and bird seeds. (Thank you, Michaels!) While they worked on putting the bird feeder together (see Image), Connie shared some “Bird Basics” with the girls. Let’s see how much you know. Answer the following questions about OWLS with a TRUE or FALSE response.
-Their eyes don’t move
-They can rotate their heads 270 degrees
-A group of them is called a parliament

You can find the answers to these questions at the end of this Post. (Don’t look until you answer the questions yourself. NO Cheating!)

Since March was Women’s History Month, of course, Connie highlighted a woman who made a significant contribution to America. To stay connected with the Courage and Bird focus, Connie selected Rosalie Barrow Edge. Ms. Edge was an environmental advocate, suffragist, New York socialite, and amateur bird watcher. In 1934 she founded the world’s first preserve for birds of prey—Hawk Mountain Sanctuary near Kempton, PA. She shaped the first generation of environmental activists and she bravely exposed the profit motives of some prominent male conservationists. During her time she was considered the greatest woman conservationist and was known as “the most honest, unselfish, indomitable hellcat in the history of conservation.”

After hearing about Rosalie Barrow Edge, participating in a Raffle, and taking a short break, the girls began the Movement/Dance section of the Workshop. The girls had a choice—they could participate in a Yoga session with Ms. Gabby (Gabby Too-A-Foo, a Guest Instructor who conducted Yoga during the summer CampQUEST@Home program) or 350 Dance Aerobics with Ms. Anissa (Anissa Smith, a new Guest Instructor, who has expressed interest in working with the group again). Both instructors are certified and GQ thanks them for taking the time to share their expertise with the girls. By the way, the girls fully participated and thoroughly enjoyed their selected session.

The Courage theme was the focus of the next interactive activity that was put together by Ms. Sarah and Ms. Lauren (Sarah Godlewski and Lauren Constantino, volunteers who have faithfully worked with Connie since the inception of CampQUEST@Home). This activity which was enthusiastically received by the girls, incorporated music, video, a drawing exercise, and discussions that dealt with Courage.

Staying on the Courage theme and using their creativity and the materials that were leftover from past craft projects, along with a Chinese food takeout box and a copy of their headshot that Connie sent them; the girls were asked to create a “Courage Box”. They utilized markers, crayons, lace, feathers, ribbon, rhinestones, sequin fabric, etc. to design their box. They were instructed to fill the box with inspirational quotes they come across and paper cut out “nervous tummy” butterflies to “let free” when they are feeling anxious. It was also suggested that they leverage part of the Prework Assignment they had to complete that asked them to identify two things:
- That makes you nervous or afraid
- In your life that took courage to accomplish
- You’d like to do but still need the courage to do so
The Courage Box was described as the perfect place to store these thoughts on strips of paper neatly folded to fit into the box.

As a homework assignment that ties Courage and Birds again, the girls were asked, “If you were a bird and your name was Courage, what would you look like?” To create this “Courage Bird” the girls will use their imagination and their excess supplies. Connie asked them to send her a photo of their finished work to be included in the next Silver Hemlock Newsletter.

Wrapping up the “Spring Into Courage” Workshop was done by sharing a short Camp Report, completing the Exit Survey (received all “Thumbs Up”, again), reciting the Camp Pledge, and singing “We are Many. We are One.” Speaking of the Camp Pledge, hey Alumnae, do you remember the words of the Camp Pledge? Think about it. We’ll send you the words in our next Post.

The last scheduled CampQUEST@Home Year-Round Workshop will be held Saturday, June 5. This Workshop will be different, but we’ll tell you more about it later. For now—check out the answers to the owl questions--triple trues, all answers were true.
