SPOTLIGHT ON GQ RECRUITER/REGISTRAR SHANNY HERRERA
Let’s say Carol is at an event and the meal is being served. She’s in the serving line and she presents her plate to the young man serving roasted brussels sprouts with bacon, dried cherries and crunchy walnuts. With a smile she asks for a “No Thank You Serving”. The young man, while politely returning her smile, gives Carol a confused look.
OK Alums, what is Carol asking for?
If you said she’s asking for a very small serving so she can just taste the brussels sprouts dish, you are correct. Congrats!
At Camp On-Neh-Tah campers are encouraged to request a “No Thank You Serving” for food items they don’t typically eat. This request enables the girls to step out of their comfort zones and try new foods without wasting food.
Shanny Herrera, our new Recruiter/Registrar, shared that during her camping days at Camp Oh-Neh-Tah, “No Thank You Servings” exposed her to new vegetables that she grew to love. So much so that when she got back to NYC, she asked her mother to buy and serve those vegetables at home.
Besides discovering new vegetables, Shanny discovered herself at camp. Free of the bullying and teasing she experienced in her neighborhood and at school, and surrounded by staff that truly cared about her and “saw her inner soul”, Shanny said she came out of her shell. She began to feel good about herself and see herself through a different lens. Her self-confidence grew, she became more outgoing and her friendships with fellow campers blossomed. Shanny shared that she can still remember that feeling of believing she could do anything. (See image of campers—that’s Shanny below the “me”.)
Speaking of memories, Shanny said her fondest memory of Camp Oh-Neh-Tah, which she attended from age 9 to 13, was the Mt. Zoar multi-day hike she took her last summer at camp. The beauty, the challenge, the independence, the responsibilities and the sense of accomplishment that came with successfully executing camping tasks, strengthened her self-confidence. This self-confidence grew steadily over the 5 full summers she spent at camp. By the way, Shanny attended camp in the days when girls could be at Camp Oh-Neh-Tah from June to August.
To this day, Shanny still loves camping. She shared that she goes camping with other couples and the experience of pitching a tent and being outdoors in fresh air by the water, brings to mind visions of Camp Oh-Neh-Tah and her 13th birthday that she celebrated on Mt. Zoar.
When asked why she decided to take on the Recruiter/Registrar role, Shanny said it was a natural next step on the ladder of getting reengaged with GQ. This reengagement process started with attending Annual Alumnae Weekends with her sister Selina, when the weekends were reborn in 2016. (Selina attended camp with Shanny in the late 70’s early 80’s.) From attending Annual Alumnae Weekends, she got involved with CampQUEST@Home and CampQUEST@Home Year-Round. By then she was committed to helping the GQ mission anyway possible.
With her background in being an advocate for and working with youth as the Program Director with the NYC Division Youth Community Development, The Reading Team and the Bell Foundation, and the network she has developed in this space over the years, Shanny said she felt that she could bring value and contribute to the effort of finding girls to participate in GQ programs.
Shanny explained that so many girls from the inner-city never get the chance to leave the city to participate in a program like SEED and explore a different environment like Camp Oh-Neh-Tah—one that’s so wide open and green and freeing. She said this experience can change your perspective on life forever and give you that extra strength to persevere and confront obstacles. Motivated by maximizing the number of girls being given this opportunity to experience what she experienced when she attended camp, keeps Shanny active in the Recruiting/Registrar role as she juggles her full time job, her role as the Executive Director of the Bronx Chapter of the National Action Network and her junior sportswear line-Get Money Girl (getmoneygirl.com) that she recently relaunched.
As a camper who initially didn’t look forward to camp, but changed to one who couldn’t wait for camp to start, especially once she became a Senior Camper, Shanny feels honored to be in a position that allows her to give back to GQ. She proudly shared that GQ changed the trajectory of her life and that she hopes the girls she recruits and registers for camp will be blessed with the same favor.
Well GQ feels blessed to have Shanny’s support with recruiting and registration. Picking up the reins and filling this critical role, that is more challenging during a pandemic, took an enormous weight off our Camp Director, Connie Stine. (See image of Shanny and Connie.) Considering the extra challenges Connie faces this year with numerous protocols that have to be in place to keep campers and staff healthy and safe, Shanny’s effort is truly truly appreciated.
