For our high school volunteers, it’s about a lot more than learning how to use tools! Students get hands-on experience with teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and working together toward a common goal✨

And at the end of the build, they get to see exactly what all that teamwork accomplished: a finished ramp that will make a real difference for someone in their community ♿️👏

Behind every finished ramp are people who help make it happen💙

From coordinating builds and volunteers to preparing materials and working behind the scenes, there’s a lot that happens before a ramp is ready to roll!
We’re grateful for the people who keep the RAMPS mission moving forward and help turn a community need into a finished ramp ♿️ These pictures were from a recent build with volunteers from a local Masonic Lodge!

Our volunteers come with all different skill levels, and you’ll have guidance along the way as you learn, work together, and watch a ramp take shape ♿️

All you need is a willingness to show up, lend a hand, and be part of the team 🙌

Mr. and Mrs. R are city residents, both 84 years old, who have lived
in their house for 50+ years. Ms. R has very severe rheumatoid
arthritis and other medical problems and is unable to maneuver their steps safely or easily. She uses a wheelchair to go out, and Mr. R struggles to help her.
With the help of Mr. R's fellow Masonic Lodge members, community volunteers, and staff, we completed a ramp for the family last week and made it much safer for them to get to doctor’s appointments, meetings, and social gatherings. Ms. R was all smiles on her test-run down the ramp!

Piece by piece, it all comes together🔨

With RAMPS, we use a modular ramp system, allowing our teams to assemble each ramp to fit the needs of the home and the person who will use it.

What starts as individual pieces becomes something much bigger: safe, accessible entry to and from home ♿️

Mr. F is a 60 year old city resident who lives alone. He has had cancer, and a hip surgery which failed. He is unable to bend his right leg and uses a motorized scooter to get around. He even drives one of his two scooters around town to doctors’ appointments and the grocery store. He had a steep ramp over the front steps, part aluminum, part shoddy wood, all of it just an accident ready to happen.

On Thursday the team from Dominion Energy volunteered to make Mr. F’s life a lot safer. Led by our new Director Nathan and by Board Member Will, the nine volunteers built a somewhat complicated ramp in a small space. Mr. Freeman was extremely happy with his new ramp, and is looking forward to enjoying more freedom and safety. Thank you Madison, Abigail, Jason, Nicholas, Tiffany, Lia, Karisma, Tori, Sam and Will! Yay Dominion Energy!

Now THIS is how you ride in style 😎♿️🎶

One of our upcoming RAMPS recipients has given his wheelchairs a little personality of their own; complete with speakers for blasting music and names to match!

Meet Cadillac and Monte Carlo🚗🎵 And soon, Cadillac and Monte Carlo will have a new ramp to roll down! 💙🔨

Please join us in welcoming Nathan Johnson, the new Executive Director of RAMPS! 🔨

✨Nathan comes to RAMPS with years of experience in accessibility and community service, including building and supervising the construction of hundreds of wheelchair ramps. He has also managed a wheelchair ramp program, completed accessibility work as a contractor, and built and led a volunteer program for a local hospice organization.

And his connection to the Richmond community runs deep! A proud Richmond native, Nathan has spent about 30 years in the area and loves his hometown…“warts and all”, as he puts it 🤗

When he’s not working, you can find him spending time with his partner, Nina, their beloved dog, Maya, or tending to his garden🌱

We’re excited to have Nathan leading RAMPS into its next chapter and continuing our mission of providing accessible ramps for members of our community♿️
Welcome to RAMPS, Nathan!👏

This is what community looks like💙

Neighbors helping neighbors. Students giving their time. Volunteers showing up ready to work. Local organizations supporting a shared mission.
Every RAMPS build is a reminder of what can happen when people come together to help someone in their own community🔨♿

One ramp at a time, it all adds up.
