Patty's Hope

Patty's Hope Patty's Hope is small nonprofit in Richmond, VA. Our mission is Help, Hope, and Healing for biological mothers of children in foster care.

Patty's Hope is a non profit organization founded by Leila and Peter Gunning. The mission of the organization is to work with the biological mothers of children in foster care. Patty was the first biological mother Pete and Leila had the opportunity to get alongside while they fostered her sweet baby girl. Patty tragically passed away 9 months after Pete and Leila had begun their journey with her.

Patty left Pete and Leila with a deep commitment to hear the stories behind each birth mother and fight for these mothers. Patty was just the first of several women that Pete and Leila have had the opportunity to work with. Each mother has been a learning experience in which they have had their eyes opened to the needs of women in similar situations as Patty. Through these experiences and with the help of friends, family, and area professionals Patty's Hope was born. Please go to the website for further information www.pattyshope.org. Parents who have spent time in foster care are at a much greater risk of losing their children to foster care.

Birth moms and dads can often be invisible in the foster care and adoption conversations. But the themes of redemption and reconciliation are key reasons to engage.

A practical reason for ensuring health and healing for birth families is not only reunification with their current child(ren), but stabilizing the family to prevent future children from coming into care.

VKB partners with Patty's Hope in Richmond and Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia to build up and serve this part of the foster care community.

Patty’s Hope provides practical help, hope, and healing for biological mothers of children in foster care. To learn more visit https://www.pattyshope.org/

The Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit purpose driven to strengthen men to be better husbands/co-parents and more active fathers for true systemic change in the Commonwealth. Among their other programs they offer classes for new dads and a foster/adoptive dad boot camp. Find more info at https://vadad.org/

Yesterday marked 13 years that Patty passed away. We planted some flowers in memory of her and gave thanks to God for using her to show us this mission: help, hope, and healing for biological mothers of children in foster care.

May God continue to bless Patty's Hope and lead the mission forward.
