It's officially summer and that means more opportunities to rest, renew, and be restored. ☀🏖

BGAV Executive Director Wayne Faison encourages pastors and church leaders to embrace recreation this time of year, create space for joy with his list of fun things to do, and remember that caring for their souls is essential to healthy ministry. After all, even Jesus stepped away to rest!

For 150 years, the Virginia Baptist Historical Society has preserved the stories, people, and convictions that have shaped Baptist life in Virginia. At its recent annual meeting, participants celebrated this milestone while reflecting on the enduring importance of religious liberty—a principle deeply rooted in Baptist history and still relevant today.

Today we honor the observance of Juneteenth - the federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the US, observed on June 19 each year - and how this day reminds us that freedom declared is not the same thing as freedom embodied.

The news of emancipation reached enslaved people in Texas more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Liberation had been proclaimed, but justice still had to make its way into communities, systems, relationships, and lives.

BGAV's Missio Alliance shares two meaningful reflections of Juneteenth and what it means to our own freedom, families, and faith:

Why do churches sometimes end up with the very outcomes they never intended?

In the latest installment of his leadership series, Michael Pumphrey explores how the systems, habits, and assumptions within our churches quietly shape leaders, congregations, and culture over time.

It's a thoughtful invitation to examine the "gravity" at work in our ministries and ask whether our structures are forming people in the way of Jesus: http://www.bgav.org/blog/the-gravity-shaping-our-church

In response to recent news on SBC messengers’ approval to advance a proposed ban on churches who allow women to serve as pastors or to preach in any capacity, BGAV stands behind our previous statements in past years affirming women in all levels of ministry and church leadership.
