Here’s some clarity on the Safeguarding Youth Training:
Took the old YPT (no 90-minute course completed)?
Full 90-minute course required
New 90-minute course expired more than 6 days ago?
Full 90-minute course required
90-minute course expired 6 days or less OR still active?
Refresher course assigned
Renewal emails will direct participants to “My Training”, where they can select “Take Course” or “Retake Course”. The system will automatically guide them to the correct training based on their status.

Important note - Anyone who has completed only the refresher without ever completing the full 90-minute course will still need to complete the full course. Clearing the browser cache may be necessary to ensure the “Retake Course” button routes correctly.

Thank you all for an amazing summer induction! This week was a fiesta of clean up after a very successful CONCLAVE, and a lot of prep for the upcoming weeks of summer camp!

This weekends service consisted, but was not limited to, totem installation, summer camp preparation, adult woodworking, and vigil nominations! All very exciting stuff that keeps our camp and lodge in tip top shape!

That about wraps up Nawakwa’s summer festivities. We hope you all have an amazing summer and we hope to see some of you camping with your troops at T-Brady! Keep an eye out on your emails for your chapter meetings and when fall get closer make sure to look out for Fall Induction dates! We can’t wait to see you then.

June is National Internet Safety Month, an annual awareness campaign dedicated to educating youth, parents, and communities about online risks while promoting responsible digital citizenship.

Scouting America is proud to support this important effort through its partnership with Know2Protect, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's national public awareness campaign to prevent and combat online child exploitation and abuse. Through this partnership, Scouts and their families gain access to valuable online safety education, practical prevention strategies, and resources for reporting suspected abuse.

Helping young people protect their privacy online can start with a few simple conversations.

During National Internet Safety Month, parents and trusted adults can help kids and teens build healthy by encouraging three key actions:

📍 Turn off location sharing services
🔒 Set social media and gaming accounts to private
👥 Remove strangers from friends lists

Small changes can make a big difference in protecting personal information and giving young people more control over who can see their content and contact them online.

Update: Philip Eugene Hagerich

October 21, 1940 - June 5, 2026

It is with great sadness that we inform you that one of our own, Philip Hagerich, passed away on Friday at the age of 85.

Phil retired from the US Army after 23 years, and spent another 20 years working as a civil servant at Fort Lee. While at Fort Lee, he joined Troop 912 as an adult leader with his sons, and later moved to Troop 900 in Prince George. During his time in both troops, he served in many roles including Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and Troop Committee. Phil was also a member of the district committee where he helped with prospective Eagle Scout Candidates, District Award of Merit selections, and sorting popcorn for distribution, just to name a few.

Phil was chosen by the adults in his troop to join to Order of the Arrow in September 1985, later completing his Vigil in 1989 and earning the Vigil name "One Who Travels Often." In the OA, Phil served as a chapter adviser for Karakona Chapter 19, and with his guidance, the chapter hosted many district camporees where Phil would always set up his trading post with snacks. At the lodge level, Phil could usually be found in the Nawakwa Scouting Museum, helping to ensure the extensive collection of Scouting memorabilia was cared for and organized. Nawakwa lodge recognized Phil's dedication to the lodge and chapter by awarding him the Founder's Award in 1995 and the James E. West Fellowship in 2008. He also earned the Arrowman Service Award (2015), Nawakwa's Lodge Centennial Service Award (2019), and the Service Recognition Award from the lodge adviser in 2020.

Phil was recognized as a "Hero Among Us" by WTVR CBS 6 in 2015. Phil Hagerich will truly be missed.

Phil's obituary can be found at https://www.ealvinsmall.com/obituaries/phillip-hagerich.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, at the Crater Road Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, 3935 S Crater Road, Petersburg. The family will welcome friends an hour prior to the service from 12:00–1:00 pm. A graveside service will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park, 1911 Birdsong Road, Petersburg.

John Martin Fugman

1970 - 2026

It is with profound sadness that we inform you that our Health Services Adviser, John Fugman, passed away over the weekend at the age of 55 after a hard-fought battle against an aggressive form of cancer.

John was an active Eagle Scout and completed his Ordeal in September of 1990. John was also active in the Order as well as on Summer Camp Staff at T. Brady Saunders. Over the years, John faithfully served in the Health Lodge at the Heart of Virginia Council Scout Reservation and assisted with numerous special events. He was also a long-time merit badge counselor and worked with countless youth on their trail to Eagle. Also within the council, John had a reputation for supporting Packs, Troops, Crews, and Ships – even serving as our Council Commodore at one point. In May of 2014, John completed his Brotherhood and shortly thereafter became the Health Services Adviser.

John was an invaluable resource for Nawakwa Lodge and the Heart of Virginia Council. Not only was he instrumental in stocking and maintaining our medical facilities with supplies, but he also spent countless hours training interested youth and young adults to serve as health officers or health officer assistants over the years. John’s interests in health and safety weren't limited to our Health Lodge – John also served actively on our council’s Risk Management Committee and served as our council’s NCAP Coordinator. His dedication to cheerful service not only yielded him the Vigil Honor (2022), but he has received several other awards including the Service Recognition Award (twice, 2021 & 2023) and the Lodge Centennial Service Award (2019) as well as the national Arrowman Service Award (2015). John's Vigil name couldn't have been more fitting: Wentamao Kehkiteniket, which translates to "Mentoring Medic".

In addition to all of this, John also faithfully served the Commonwealth through training countless city and county volunteer and professional firefighters. John even served as a fire and safety advisor for the council’s participation in the emergency preparedness exercises in preparation for the 2015 UCI Road World Championships bike race held in the Greater Richmond Area – a role where he worked closely with the four future Eagle Scouts who were leading the exercises. For all of his efforts to support youth in the council and community, John was presented the Silver Beaver Award earlier this year.

John's influence on the firefighting and Scouting communities can hardly be measured, and it is doubtful that any one person will be able to match his dedication and impact. John Fugman will truly be missed.
