Before Roots came another breakthrough: Alex Haley’s first major success was co-writing The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965), a book that still stands as an essential work of American literature and civil‑rights history.

✍️ Between 1963 and 1965, Haley conducted over 50 intensive interviews with Malcolm X, building enough trust to capture his voice authentically, transforming doubt into one of the most powerful first‑person narratives ever published

🕊️ Released just months after Malcolm X’s assassination, the book maps his journey from a troubled youth to a spiritual and political awakening. It became a bestseller and introduced his bold ideals of Black pride and freedom to audiences worldwide

⭐ Its impact has been lasting: TIME magazine named it one of the ten most important nonfiction books of the 20th century, and generations of readers credit it with transforming their worldview

🤝 Haley’s role wasn’t just ghostwriting—it was partnership. His skill in bringing Malcolm’s voice to life established the autobiography as both intimate memoir and timeless cultural testament.

🔖 Whether you’ve read it or not, this book changed the narrative around race, redemption, and identity in America.
