A PIECE OF LAUREL PARK HISTORY COULD HAVE A NEW CHAPTER!

If you remember Poplar Lodge in Laurel Park, NC, you probably remember the rustic mountain atmosphere, the big fireplace, the food, and that famous salad bar.

Poplar Lodge eventually closed its doors around 2009, during the recession, and it has remained a nostalgic part of the area's history ever since. Local accounts still remember it as a special place for dinners, celebrations, dancing, and good times.

But here's the interesting part...

Poplar Lodge is now available for a new chapter! The historic property at 2550 Hebron Road is currently listed for sale, with the property being marketed as a commercial opportunity. The listing describes the former restaurant as a Henderson County landmark with its rustic mountain-retreat feel, stone exterior, large fireplace and mountain surroundings.

WE WENT TO A HOT DOG SPOT FOR A LOBSTER ROLL IN HENDERSONVILLE, NC!

That’s right! We stopped by The Great American Hot Dog in Hendersonville and discovered they’re not just serving up some seriously good hot dogs — they’re also seafood specialists!

There are plenty of seafood options to choose from, but we had to go for the Lobster Roll… and WOW. 🦞 So tasty, so fresh, and just as delicious as always!

We also got to try some of the fried scallops, and let me tell you… SO DELISH!

If you haven’t checked this place out yet, you definitely need to put it on your list. Great food, generous portions, and a menu with something for just about everyone.

And today, we’re also sending lots of prayers, positive thoughts, and hope to owner Tom, who is currently in the hospital. We’re hearing that he’s expected to heal up and be back at the restaurant soon, and we’re wishing him a strong and speedy recovery!

Now THIS Was A Fun Day In Lake Lure!

While traveling through Lake Lure recently, we met up with some friends from Charlotte and ended up shooting this quick reel with Rising Phoenix Blacksmith out of the Hendersonville/East Flat Rock area.

But these weren't just your average “influencer friends.”

They’re performers with Circus Siren Pod out of Charlotte — an aquatic circus and performance company known for bringing together professional mermaids, aerialists, fire performers and other specialty entertainers. They perform at events around the country and internationally, so naturally we thought... let's put them in front of a blacksmith forge.

What could possibly go wrong?

And what a great time we had.

Rising Phoenix is one of those Western North Carolina experiences we love finding because you're not simply standing around watching somebody else work. They put you behind the hammer. Their hands-on experiences include everything from forging a railroad spike knife to more involved bladesmithing classes.

Fire, steel, hammers, world-traveling circus performers and a camera.

That's a pretty good day at work.

Rising Phoenix has also earned some glowing feedback from visitors, particularly for the hands-on experience, instruction and opportunity to actually walk away with something you've helped create.

We love collaborations like this because they bring together completely different worlds: local Western North Carolina craftsmanship, Lake Lure, Charlotte performers, travel, entertainment and some good old-fashioned creativity.

What a great time we had at Barnwell's Apple House in Hendersonville, NC! 🍎

We stop by here pretty regularly, and it's always one of those places that reminds me why I love Western North Carolina. Grandma Barnwell wasn't in this time, but Doug, Jeanne and Susie took such great care of all of us.

And I'll never forget something that happened here a few months ago. I stopped in, picked out some apple bread, and then realized I didn't have any cash on me.

Mrs. Barnwell didn't miss a beat. She basically said, "Well, take the apple bread and just bring me the $10 back sometime."

I wouldn't take it because I honestly didn't know when I'd be back, but that little moment stuck with me.

That's the good old ways right there.

Neighbors helping neighbors. Trusting people. Loving one another. Not assuming the worst in everybody. Sometimes you can make a difference in somebody's heart and never even realize it, simply by being kind and being TRUE.

That's something worth holding onto.

Anyway... enough of me getting sentimental over apple bread 😂 Get yourself out to Barnwell's Apple House, grab some fresh apples, apple bread and other goodies, and support a wonderful local family and WNC tradition.

Boy, has the Blue Ridge B**r Garden become THE hangout!

With so many great breweries around the area, Blue Ridge B**r Garden has turned into one of those spots where you can settle in, relax, and sample some mighty good craft b**r from breweries all across the region.

And that’s part of what makes this place so much fun. You don’t have to pick just one brewery — grab a b**r, find a spot to hang out, and maybe discover a new local favorite while you’re at it.

It’s become a pretty special part of the Downtown Hendersonville scene, and we can certainly see why folks keep coming back.
