The great Monarch migration begins! 🦋

Every year, millions of Monarch butterflies migrate 3,000 miles south between late August to mid-November to spend the winter in a warmer climate. Each migration is completed by a new "super generation," named for their ability to live eight times as long as regular monarchs in order to complete their journey. They rely on a genetic clock in their antennae that tells them when to migrate, and they navigate using the sun's position on the horizon. Once they reach Mexico, they roost on Oyamel fir trees, waiting out the winter on stored energy. In spring, this generation will reproduce, and their offspring will complete the journey back to summer breeding grounds.

Did you know the Monarch is the only butterfly known to complete a two-way migration?
