PACK 620 OFFICIAL GRAND PRIX PINEWOOD DERBY RULES / SPECIFICATIONS
RULES / SPECIFICATIONS:
1. NEW CAR – Car must be new; a car from a previous year cannot be used. Numbers will be assigned at the time of weigh-in.
2. Width – Overall width shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches, see figure 1.
3. LENGTH – Overall length should be as close to 7 inches as possible, see figure 1.
4. WEIGHT – Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces. (Outlaw car shall not exceed 5 ounces) No loose materials of any kind are permitted in the car. The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by the addition of wood or metal/lead only, provided it is securely built into the body. This means if you attach weights to the bottom of the car, wood must be removed and the weights inserted in the recessed area. Note: The bottom of the car must have a minimum clearance of 3/8 inch, see figure 1, or the car will not clear the track center guide.
5. WEIGHING – The official pinewood derby scale will be available every Monday of January before the race. This scale is the official scale and will be used for the official weigh-in before the race. No other measuring devices will be allowed.
6. WHEELS/AXLES – Only official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby wheels and axles are permitted. (This means the wheels and axles that came in the Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit) No excessive altering of the wheels and axles will be allowed. The distance between front and rear axles must be between 3 ½ and 4 ½ inches, see figure 1. Distance between inside of wheels, side to side, must be 1 ¾ inches, see figure 1 or car will not fit over track center guide.
7. WHEEL BEARINGS – Washers, bushings and spacers are not allowed.
8. Body – The block of wood that comes with the kit is recommended, but a substitute block of pine wood may be used as long as all dimensional specifications are met. Block width may be 2 ¾ inches maximum to in-set wheels.
9. SPRINGING – The car shall not ride on springs.
10. DETAILING – Details such as steering wheel, driver, decals, painting and interior detail are allowed as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width and weight specifications.
11. Attachments – The car must be free-wheeling with no starting devices.
12. Inspection – Each car must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Committee before it can race. A car that doesn’t meet all specifications can race but will be disqualified from any Den or Final Round Trophies. No modifications can be made to the car after check-in.
13. No lubrication after final weigh-in.
14. No repairs after final weigh-in unless the car is damaged in handling or in a race.
