We all want to make disciples, but do we all mean the same thing when we say that?

A lead pastor, children's minister, student pastor, and parent might all agree that discipleship matters. Yet each could have a different picture of what it looks like in everyday life.

And those differences shape what we teach, what we prioritize, and how we equip people.

Shared language is a starting point. Shared understanding helps a church move in the same direction.

Here's a question worth asking your leadership team:
▫️When we say we're making disciples, could each of us clearly explain what that means and what it looks like in our church?

Clarity doesn't mean every ministry looks the same. It means we're working toward the same disciple-making vision, from childhood through adulthood.

Before we ask what our ministries should do, it's worth asking who we're praying our people become.

What biblical qualities do we hope to see growing in the lives of our children, students, and adults? How can each ministry intentionally cultivate those qualities in the unique community God has called us to serve?

At Replicate, we call this your Dream Disciple - a shared, biblical picture of the disciple your church is praying and working toward developing.

That vision gives direction to the strategies, programs, and decisions that follow.

Pastors, thank you for faithfully investing in people and shepherding them toward Christlikeness. The fruit of that investment often takes years to see (and we may never see it this side of heaven), but the work matters.

On paper, we know the aim of church leadership is to equip people for ministry. But in the pace of our culture today, it’s easy for discipleship to become something we add to our programming rather than the mission that shapes it.

In Chapter 6 of Movement-Ready Church, Robby Gallaty and Vick Green challenge a common ministry assumption: “The leaders of the church are not called to execute the works of ministry for the saints but to equip the saints for the work of ministry.”

That shift matters. When pastors become the primary doers of ministry, disciple-making can remain dependent on a few leaders. BUT when everyday believers are equipped to live on mission, make disciples, and eventually equip others, ownership of the mission begins to multiply.

That’s a big part of why Replicate exists. We come alongside pastors and church leadership teams to build the clarity, culture, and practical disciple-making framework needed to equip everyday believers to make disciples where they live, work, and play.

It’s not about replacing the ministry of church leaders. It’s about equipping the whole church to take ownership of the mission Jesus gave us and living out Ephesians 4:12.

A busy church can still miss the deeper question: Are people becoming more like Jesus?

Attendance matters. Serving matters. Groups, programs, and ministry involvement matter. But activity was never meant to be the finish line.

When we confuse participation with transformation, it changes what we celebrate, what we measure, and ultimately what we build ministry around. We have to change our scoreboard.

So maybe the better question for your leadership team this week isn’t only, “How many people are participating?” It’s also: “Who are our people becoming?”
