What they can point you at: rent and utility help, food, transportation, childcare, legal aid, employment, senior services, behavioural health and addiction services, domestic violence services.

Why this is on our list — a lot of what pushes a Veteran toward a crisis is not a clinical problem. It is a shut-off notice, an eviction, a car that will not start. Those things have phone numbers.

Put it in your phone. Then send it to somebody who is three weeks out from needing it.

Buddy Check, Monday.

Pick 22 Buddies, make a chat group, check daily. Each person in the group make their own group of 22, they check daily, and so on.

New VA data this month: 62% of the Veterans lost in 2024 were not in VA care in the year they died or the year before.

Which means you are the system for your 22. That is not a figure of speech. A text from a guy he served with gets read. A letter from an agency does not.

Send one today, and make it a question he has to actually answer:
"When did you last sleep through the night?"
"What's been the hardest part of this week?"
"You still going to that thing, or did you quit?"

One of them will answer honestly. That is why we do this every single Monday instead of every September.

Today is World Mental Health Day. We are going to use it to ask you for something, and then tell you exactly what it buys.

Mental health care for a Veteran in this town is often free, often faster than you think, and almost always unknown to the person who needs it. Closing that gap is the entire job.

$22 a month. Scan the code or go to wspfoundation.org. The platform charges this Foundation no fee, so what you give reaches the work.

What it covers: a neurofeedback course for someone the system already gave up on. Part of a service dog's training. A power bill so a family keeps the lights on while somebody gets stable.

Straight talk: the numbers changed last week, and one of them should change what you do today.

VA released its 2026 National Veteran Su***de Prevention Annual Report. For 2024: 6,488 Veterans lost. That is 17.7 a day, down from 18.2 the year before.

Here is the figure we keep coming back to. 62% of them were not receiving VA health care in the year they died or the year before. Nobody with a clipboard had eyes on them.

And this pair, read together: among Veterans enrolled in VA care the rate fell 4.8% in a single year. Among Veterans not enrolled, it rose 3.7%.

Care works. Being outside the system is the risk.

About our name — "22" comes from a 2011 VA study. We kept it because it is what people recognise, not because it is today's figure. Today's figure is 17.7 a day, and every one of them belonged to somebody.

So the job is unglamorous. Find the ones who are not in the system and walk them in. Offer to make the call. Offer to sit in the parking lot while they go inside. That is the whole thing.
