Thank you to the Henderson Lions Club for having us at yesterday’s meeting! We’re grateful for the opportunity to share more about the Boys & Girls Club and the impact being made in our community every day. Thank you for supporting local youth and families! 💙💛
Ryan Bibb, chief operating officer for the Cliff Hagan Boys & Girls Club, spoke about his organization, particularly its Henderson Unit.
Formed in 1860 by nuns in Hartford, Conn., to provide life structure to boys wandering the streets, the nation’s 5,500 Boys & Girls Clubs have four priorities for helping youngsters age 6 to 18 (primarily elementary and middle schoolers):
Academic success, including keeping kids at grade level & ready for graduation
Character & leadership
Health & well-being
Life & workforce readiness
The Henderson Unit opened at Community Baptist Church in August 2019 before moving to its permanent home at the former National Guard Armory at 735 N. Elm St. in October 2023. The club had 231 youth members in 2025, with families paying $25 per year per youngster. The club is open after school from 2:30-6:30pm weekdays. During the summer, it is open from 7:30am-5:30pm weekdays; approximately 200 youngsters participate in the 8-week-long summer program, for which families pay $25 per week that includes breakfast, lunch, a snack, field trips & other programming.
The Henderson Unit has two full-time employees — Unit Director Detona Wilson and newly hired Special Events & Donor Relations Coordinator Emily Hudson, who accompanied Ryan today — and 8 part-time employees who work during the after-school hours (which increases to 14 during the summer).
Contrary to popular belief, Boys & Girls Club participants don’t have to come from low- to moderate-income households, although about 60% do, while 31% come from single-parent homes.
The Henderson Unit operates on an annual budget of $323,000, which includes grants from the city & county; funds from the Kentucky Alliance of Boys & Girls Club; United Way; fundraisers; and donations.
Youth members are surveyed each year, and Ryan said the Henderson Unit routinely outperforms the Boys & Girls Club national metrics.
