Spent the weekend at EKU. We started out at 8am Friday morning loading the van. We had lunch at Cookout in Richmond and headed to EKU to check in. While checking in Riley went to look at the art contest photos. Auri won 2nd place in her age group for her drawing.
Next stop was Walmart to get a few supplies for the weekend. After getting settled it was time to pack up the wagon for the evening. We had dinner, attended opening ceremonies, and headed to Unified Bocce. Odell & Riley placed 1st in their co-ed division and Greg & Ian placed 2nd in their male division. While Greg & Ian finished their game Odell & I put up our tent for Saturday. It was still standing Saturday morning so Odell said we did a good job! After breakfast Saturday morning Chad competed in the 100M dash placing 3rd and placing 4th in softball throw. We attended Healthy Athletes where Odell got socks and shoe deodorizer balls for his cleats. Chad got to order recreational glasses to wear for sports. Finished the night at the Luau dance where Odell & Riley danced to all the group dances & Odell led the train. Sunday we had breakfast, loaded up and stopped at Buc-ee’s. Another great weekend provided by Special Olympics Kentucky and all of the sponsors! Odell is already talking about playing soccer at the games next year where he & Chad will be goalies. 😊

Friday we are heading to Summer Games! The athletes & unified partners are looking forward to participating in bocce & track & field. They love Olympic Town, the dance & visiting with friends they have met over the years. They are also looking forward to their annual trip to Buc-ee’s Sunday morning before we head home. Good luck to our athletes & unified partners!

Tonight we played Ohio Co & Butler Co. The games tonight looked a little different. We were down several players along with Ohio Co the 1st game. Butler players filled in for both teams so we would have enough to play. Our 2nd game Ohio Co helped us with some extra players. Riley filled in as a player tonight instead of coaching from the sidelines. She coached from the field & played for our team. She also was coaching some of the other players from both teams on the field too. She was great about matching their skill level. Towards the end of the game I saw her shielding the other team’s player so he could take the ball down the field. Tonight really wasn’t about who won or lost. It was about playing soccer! Three teams came together & played as 2 teams each game. Proud of all the players & good luck to Butler Co & Ohio Co next weekend at Summer Games. We will try & make it to the soccer field to cheer them on. Tonight they played for the love of the game.

Saturday we had Bocce practice. We will have 2 unified teams this year. This is Odell’s 1st year to play. Odell has played every sport we offer except Bocce. This summer he plans to play unified with Riley. This will be Ian & Greg’s 3rd year competing as a unified team. We had a great practice! Odell is already asked what day we are practicing next week!😊

Tri-County had a busy day Saturday! We participated in Track & Field Regionals in Owensboro and attended the BIAC special needs prom. We had Mark and Auri get medals for their participation in the art contest, and Mark won a first-place ribbon for his art. We had athletes place in the 100m dash, softball throw, and long jump. Everyone who attended the prom had a good time dancing and socializing with their friends. They look forward to the prom every year. Thanks to Shadley Stone with the BIAC for printing tickets they could keep as souvenirs; they were excited to have real prom tickets!

Sunday Tri-County played their 1st soccer game. This is our 1st season to have a soccer team. We only had 4 weeks to practice. The other 2 teams we played were playing their 1st season too. Tri-County won both games & placed 1st in our bracket of 3 teams! When we started the season we had several decide not to play. We had to scramble to find players. We had 2 that had not intended & didn’t really want to play but agreed to help the team. The last 2 weeks we had another player join. The coaches & I worried we wouldn’t have enough to roster & we did not want to have to tell them we couldn’t play. We finally got the 8 players we needed to play. . After seeing them play Sunday I think we realized we couldn’t have had a better team. Did we make a few mistakes & are we still learning? The answer is yes. We can also say everyone of our players played as a team. Everyone that took the field contributed to the game. They helped their teammates on the field & encouraged each other throughout the game. We enjoyed seeing them use the skills they were taught to play the game, but them choosing to be kind, encouraging & support their teammates was the best part!

We had our last practice before regionals Thursday night. We worked on corner kicks & goal kicks. We have covered a lot in 4 weeks! The team is looking forward to playing tomorrow in Louisville. Win or lose they have enjoyed learning soccer & have worked hard. The coaches have discussed maybe doing a few practices over the summer so we can continue to work on our skills. If anyone would like to play next season you can join us for summer skills training. When we have more information about dates we will train we will post it. Good luck to our team at regionals tomorrow!

Our athletes are enjoying learning soccer! Last night we addressed defending, passing to teammates, & Coach Riley & Coach Sean both demonstrated corner kicks. One more practice before regionals in Louisville on Sunday! They are already talking about adding new teammates & new uniforms for next season. We are very thankful to have 2 coaches who both played soccer. They have done a great job demonstrating & explaining the game. When they started practicing 4 weeks ago no one on the team had ever played! Some said they would try it but wasn’t sure if they would like it have actually really loved it! Good luck at regionals on Sunday!!
