In decades of public service, law enforcement, juvenile justice, education, social work, corrections, I’ve seen one thing without exception: waste. Not waste of resources or budget, but waste of human potential.
I’ve sat across from incarcerated men with the philosophical depth of scholars. I’ve talked to system-involved youth carrying ideas half-formed, unheard, unrecorded that could have reshaped medicine, energy, technology. Minds capable of extraordinary things, tangled instead in survival, trauma, and a system that was never built to notice them.
That’s the real cost of a broken safety net. It’s not just the individual who falls through, it’s the cure never discovered, the invention never built, the leader never developed. Every young person who ages out of foster care without support isn’t just a statistic. They’re a question mark on what they might have given the world.
At Phoenix Foundation of Nevada, we believe recognizing and cultivating that untapped potential isn’t charity its investment. It’s how a community gets its return on every life inside it.
We need a revolution in how we see human development. Not a system that manages young people until they age out, but one that identifies, nurtures, and unleashes what’s already in them.
That revolution starts with the ones still standing at the edge,the young people aging out of foster care, right now, waiting for someone to bet on them.
Let’s stop wasting greatness. Let’s cultivate it.
