The Nevada State AFL-CIO is proud to announce the Grace Mactal Continuing Education Scholarship, established to honor the legacy of Grace Mactal who is a lifelong advocate for workers’ education, professional development, and leadership within the labor movement.

Grace Mactal is the retired Executive Director of SEIU 1107, Nevada’s largest union of healthcare and public service workers, representing over 19,000 members. With nearly 30 years of organizing experience, Grace has devoted her life to empowering workers, advancing racial and economic justice, and raising standards for all working people. She also served as a Vice President of the Nevada State AFL-CIO, where she helped strengthen solidarity and advocacy efforts for working families across the state.

This scholarship is designed to support union members pursuing continuing education, certifications, professional licensing, or training programs that help strengthen their skills and advance opportunities for working people.

Scholarship Details:

Two (2) scholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded annually.
Funds may be used toward:
Tuition
Certification programs
Licensing fees
Other eligible educational or professional development expenses
Requirements:

Be a current union member in good standing with a union affiliated with the Nevada State AFL-CIO for at least one (1) year prior to the application deadline.
Be enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, a continuing education course, certificate program, or professional training related to their current or future field of work.
Submit all required application materials by the deadline.

The Nevada State AFL-CIO congratulates Nevada’s administrative and clerical workers on their successful vote to unionize, marking another major victory for Nevada’s labor movement. This decision clears the way for collective bargaining negotiations, gives employees a stronger voice on the job, and means over 3,500 employees would join AFSCME Local 4041.

Nevada State AFL-CIO SuperWalk for Miguel for Assembly District 15 with Southern Nevada Building Trades, SEIU Nevada, Teamsters Nevada, and more!

Miguel Dávila is a proud SEIU Local 1107 member, city planner, endorsed by labor, and a graduate of the Nevada State AFL-CIO Labor Candidate Training Program.

Miguel’s story reflects the resilience and determination of Nevada’s working families. He moved to the United States at 15 and quickly learned to navigate everyday challenges like paying bills, managing leases, and accessing healthcare in a new language. Despite those barriers, he graduated from Green Valley High School, earned his degree from UNLV, and later graduated from MIT.

He has dedicated his career to public service, beginning in 2014 in Senator Harry Reid’s Las Vegas office. He later served as a casework manager for Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, where he helped Nevadans access Social Security benefits, supported October 1 survivors in securing assistance, and assisted families with mortgage relief.

Now, he’s running to build people power in the Nevada Legislature and fight for working families across our state.

A member of the Nevada Assembly said struggling while you’re in school is just what you’re supposed to do, but we disagree.

All work should be fairly compensated, and TAs and administrators should be allowed to join a union!

A majority of postdoctoral scholars across the Nevada System of Higher Education have signed cards in support of forming a union
