Black History Spotlight

When you hear the name John Lewis, your mind probably goes straight to the Civil Rights activist and U.S. Congressman. And while that John Lewis is legendary, today’s Black History spotlight belongs to **another trailblazer, John June Lewis, Sr...

John June Lewis, Sr. holds the distinction of being the first Black winery owner and winemaker in the United States. After serving in World War I, Lewis spent time in France, where he developed an appreciation for wine and viticulture. When he returned home to Virginia, he didn’t just admire the craft, he claimed it.

In 1940, Lewis founded Woburn Winery in Clarksville, Virginia, making history just a few years after Prohibition ended and during a time when Black ownership in agriculture, especially in the wine industry, was nearly unheard of. Despite limited access to capital, resources, and industry networks, he successfully produced and sold wine, breaking barriers in a space that was never designed with him in mind.

His legacy reminds us that Black excellence has always existed in places we’re rarely told to look, from courtrooms to vineyards, from boardrooms to wine cellars.

Black history isn’t one story. It’s many. And John June Lewis, Sr. is one worth knowing.

Big News for Homebuyers! 🏡

Starting November 16, 2025, Fannie Mae will remove the minimum 620 credit score requirement for conventional loans submitted through its Desktop Underwriter® (DU) system.

This means buyers with limited or nontraditional credit histories could have more opportunities to qualify — lenders will now look at the whole financial picture, not just the number.
