While heatstroke can happen to any child, even those with the most loving parents, grandparents, babysitters, and other caregivers, it is important to take steps to help reduce the risk.

Although fall is here, cars can still heat up faster than you think. Even on a seemingly mild day, temperatures inside a car can rise nearly 20 degrees in 10 minutes, and cracking the window has no effect.

This , we released a new study! The report, Booster Seat Use in the USA: Breakthroughs and Barriers, found that four out of five parents moved their child out of a booster seat before the child was big enough— and that three in four are unaware that kids need to ride in boosters until they're at least 4-foot-9-inches tall.

"Motor vehicle crashes are the second-leading cause of death for children ages 4 to 10," said Torine Creppy, president of Safe Kids Worldwide. "Booster seats save lives and prevent serious injuries but only if we use them and make sure they are adjusted properly. Here's a great first step: once your child is big enough to use a booster seat, keep using it until they can safely ride in a seat belt alone. It's the best way to keep your child safe."

Car seats are designed to snap into a vehicle base or a stroller – not a shopping cart. The baby is at risk of falling from a shopping cart and the car seat could be damaged in a mishap. Instead, you can place the car seat in the shopping cart or wear the baby, but never put the car seat on top of the shopping cart.

This year, 31 children have died from vehicular heatstroke. Over half of heatstroke deaths occur when a distracted caregiver accidentally leaves a quiet child in a vehicle. Here’s how we can work together to keep these preventable tragedies from happening.
