This. Is. Trauma.
This is what trauma looks like when you’re little and are unable to regulate your emotions.
This is what trauma looks like when you don’t know how to use your words and even when you try you get frustrated when others don’t understand.
This is what trauma looks like when you have a two hour meltdown in your school classroom and your peers have to be removed from the room to keep them safe.
The teacher in the classroom is PHENOMENAL. She is kind and patient. She is loving and passionate. She works so hard for her kids and to keep her room nice so that the kids can experience a learning environment similar to that of kids in traditional classroom settings. She is a SECOND YEAR TEACHER. She had these same kiddos last year and dealt with the same behaviors and the same class destruction and SHE 👏🏼 CAME 👏🏼 BACK 👏🏼 I couldn’t believe it when I found out she was going to be with “my kiddos” again this year. I really thought she would take another position. I mean, just look at this….who could blame her if she did? But, she’s here. Toughing it out with them. Trying. Showing up. Loving them. Being a constant.
When I tell you that teachers are tired, I mean it. They are exhausted. Unappreciated. Undervalued. Over worked. (As a whole, not specific to my region or any other region). They have to delicately navigate between managing their classrooms and not upsetting parents. Teachers have been threatened. Stalked. Bullied. Assaulted. Just today I saw a teacher get hit, kicked, and spat on by a student. (I had a chair thrown at me and a broom swung at me.)
Tomorrow, this teacher will return along with her assistant who was also assaulted. They will return and they will show kindness and compassion all over again. (Remember, they are our kiddo’s constants.) They may or may not have a day similar to today. They will know there’s always a possibility of it when walking into the building. Yet, they will greet each kid with kindness and love.
If you have teachers or administrators in your life, remember to thank them for all that they do. Everything seen and unseen as I am sure they don’t share the hard days as much as they share the good days. I am so blessed to know some fantastic teachers and administrators in my county. I’m grateful for all that they do for our kiddos and how hard they work to try and help every student in every school.
Teachers are such a valuable resource for our children. Today, my heart is heavy for them ❤️
