So proud of our friends at Park & Play Afterschool! The students are settling into routines and taking advantage of this amazing opportunity!

Today we witnessed the group sign in, find a seat and immediately begin working together on their exit ticket worksheets.

With the Perry Memorial bookmobile onsite many students checked out library books. We encouraged them to read quietly. Once they finished the exit ticket worksheet and read a book. We brought out the treasure box for a reward.

Park & Play is a free afterschool program offered to the residents of Vance County Housing Authority. All school age students receive homework support, a hot meal, fresh fruits and vegetables for snack, and the opportunity to learn, play, and grow together! This program includes project based learning activities and incentive field trips. Our goal is provide students with opportunities that prepare them to be successful and productive citizens!

Park & Play Senior visited our beloved neighbors at Vance Senior Housing Apartments today and the love and joy were indeed felt!

Rev Coach Debra Taylor started the session by sharing an encouraging and uplifting message with the group. Followed by intentional movement and exercises to upbeat music.

Today’s activity was wreath making and door decorations. We had a special guest come to lend a helping hand and share her expertise. Huge shoutout to Tomika Jones of Door, Charms, & Things. Thank you so much! You’re the best and the group had a blast!

Park & Play Afterschool- The theme this week is Personal Hygiene and Self Care. The kids completed a word search and/or a coloring sheet for the the exit ticket!

Our discussion today focused on the importance of having proper hygiene and taking care of your body! We will continue the discussion each day.

Dinner was chicken wraps with potato salad, cucumber salad, and diced peaches! Snack included crackers and string cheese.

Park & Play Afterschool October Field Trip to Poe Center for Health Education!

The kids had an absolute blast and learned so much along the way! In afterschool, we have been learning about physical health, mental health, and self-care. Today those learning experiences were brought to life!

Shoutout to our amazing Health Educators/Tour Guides who greeted us at the door with open arms to share all the exciting experiences that await us!

⭐️ Interactive presentations! 🙌🏽

⭐️ We sat inside the cranium and learned how the human brain works! 🧠

⭐️ We toured the center and learned all things human body and how to maintain it! 💪🏽

⭐️ The PlayWell Park was by the group favorite. A large park that allowed the kids to play and learn!

Our Wednesday 11am Minority Diabetes Prevention Program cohort have completed the first session. The group was lively, upbeat, and engaging! We look forward to another opportunity to inspire and encourage my community on the importance of health and wellness, specifically as it relates to preventing and/or delaying Type 2 diabetes.

AutoBrite Express is holding their 4th annual haunted carwash on October 23 and 24, 2026 from 5-9 pm.

Each year they pick a local charity to donate the funds raised on those nights. On the 23rd of this year, all money raised from 5-9 will go to Rebuilding Hope. On the 24th, all money raised will go to AIM High: Keep Pressing.

They are also selling Halloween shirts featuring the event promo/graphic shown in the pictures; these sales are also part of the fundraiser and can be purchased at Autobrite Express, 211 N Cooper Drive, Henderson while supplies last. Kids and adults will receive candy/treat bags with each wash purchased.

Autobrite Car Washes, Inc. was founded in 1995 and is a locally owned family business serving Vance, Granville, Franklin & Warren Counties.

Today concluded our week of Park & Play Afterschool with fall break scheduled for Thursday and Friday!

To wrap up our theme for Mental Health Week we had two very special guests come visit today and the students were ready to engage and ask questions. Thank you DrShannon Hargrove-Scott and Janielle Watkins for an awesome experience!

This was a very powerful conversation and we are so grateful for the ladies taking the time out to pour into our students.

Students were also given an opportunity to speak with the Therapists one on one to discuss personal matters.

This FREE course will be offered on Wednesdays from 11am-12pm. Together we will walk through engaging topics to support healthy lifestyle choices and strategies to prevent and/delay Type 2 Diabetes. Topics include nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep habits, and many more!
