We are always asked what is the significance of purple and domestic violence.

Why Purple Became the Color of Domestic Violence Awareness

When people think of domestic violence awareness, one color stands above all others: PURPLE 💜

Every October, you’ll see purple ribbons, purple lights, purple shirts, and purple events across the country. But have you ever wondered why purple was chosen?

Purple has long been associated with courage, dignity, strength, and survival. These are qualities that many survivors of domestic violence demonstrate every day, often in ways the world never sees nor understands!

Domestic violence can leave visible bruises, but it also leaves emotional wounds that may take years to heal. The color purple serves as a reminder that survivors are more than what happened to them. They are resilient people rebuilding their lives one step at a time.

The purple ribbon became a symbol of Domestic Violence Awareness during the movement’s early efforts to bring this issue out of the shadows. Advocates wanted a color that represented both the pain survivors endure and the hope that healing is possible. Purple was chosen because it reflects both strength and compassion.

Today, wearing purple is more than a gesture. It is a way of saying:

“I see you.”

“You matter.”

“You are not alone.”

For organizations such as The Chloe Randolph Organization, Inc., purple represents something even deeper. It represents the courage it takes to ask for help. It represents the determination to break the cycle of abuse. It represents the men, women, and children who have found the strength to reclaim their lives.

Every survivor’s journey is different. Some are just beginning to recognize the signs of abuse. Some are planning their escape. Others are years into their healing journey. No matter where they are on that road, the message remains the same:

There is hope.

There is support.

There is life after abuse.

So the next time you see someone wearing purple, remember what it stands for. It is not just a color. It is a symbol of survival, courage, and the belief that every person deserves to live free from abuse.

The Chloe Randolph Organization proudly stands with survivors. We wear purple not because it represents victimhood, but because it represents strength.

The color purple runs a little deeper for us as well. Purple to us stands for strength and courage that our beautiful Chloe exhibited on March 23, 2019. She died that morning, protecting the one thing she loved more than anything in this world, and that was her son, Slim. She was brutally murdered, to the point of ex*****on style, by an individual that was a coward. The one thing he never took from her was her courage and strength.
