Susie Martinez Villalpando, Spiritual Direction The Spiritual Director is a listener in a sacred relationship. I am a trained spiritual director and also a directee.

Not many people are aware that there are spiritual directors in your area who are trained to companion individuals on their spiritual journey and often for free. My husband and I have been married for over 30 years with two amazing adult children, a daughter-in-love and granddaughter. I have worked in education for over 30 years and served as a teacher and administrator in various contexts. I obta

ined my doctorate in education in 2013 and often wondered if I could study spirituality in the same way. At the end of a retreat, we were invited to learn more about spiritual direction. I became a directee and eventually completed a two-year cohort to be a spiritual director. Not many people are aware of spiritual direction which is available in your area and often at no cost. (The practice is not limited to one denomination.)

Whatever your day brings, turn to prayer. Whatever your situation may be, hope is a prayer away. Prayers of gratitude are also a blessing and often allow for even more graces. Prayer changes everything. 🙏

How do you see God’s light shine from others? What good deeds come from you?

Sometimes I go through my typical day and someone stands out for doing good in a simple way they may never know I noticed. More and more I try to acknowledge them so they continue to do the same for others. A home health nurse who helped us beyond the checkup using his former hospice experience, a Chic-fil-a employee blessing us or letting us know we can order lunch during breakfast, or the guy beside me on a plane who didn’t judge my cough for 10 hours. Notice the lights out there and be the light.
