Wild Montana

Wild Montana Uniting and mobilizing communities to keep Montana wild. And we are doing our part to make public land more accessible and welcoming for all people.

Since 1958, we’ve been uniting and mobilizing people across Montana, creating and growing a conservation movement around a shared love of wild public lands and waters. We work at the local level, building trust, fostering collaboration, and forging agreements for protecting the wild, enhancing public land access, and helping communities thrive. Our work has resulted in 16 wilderness areas, the Upp

er Missouri River Breaks National Monument, and other legislative, administrative, and executive victories that have protected millions of acres of public lands from irresponsible development and degradation. In recent years, our work has expanded into the State Capitol, where we drive pro-conservation policies that help communities benefit from public lands. It’s expanded to the federal level, where we’re helping make conservation and the health of rural communities priorities for public land management agencies.

Late Friday, President Trump repealed two longstanding executive orders that have guided how motorized recreation is managed on public lands for more than 50 years.

These rules helped land managers balance motorized access with protections for wildlife habitat, clean water, public safety, and quiet recreation across national forests, BLM lands, and national parks.

Travel management is how public lands continue working for everyone. Repealing these orders could increase user conflict, threaten wildlife habitat and watersheds, and create uncertainty for how public lands are managed moving forward.

We’re looking closely at what this could mean for Montana’s public lands and will continue sharing updates as we learn more.

Your Trail of the Week is Refrigerator Canyon!

True to its name, this narrow canyon stays noticeably cooler on hot summer days, thanks to its steep rock walls and dense tree cover.

A steady climb leads hikers through dramatic stone formations and quiet forest before connecting to ridgelines with sweeping views of the Helena Valley. Close to town but rich in rugged character, Refrigerator Canyon is a local favorite for a quick or long, refreshing adventure.

Trail of the Week is sponsored by Oboz Footwear: Born of Bozeman, unified by hiking.

Tucked into the cliffs just outside Helena, Refrigerator Canyon is a rewarding escape for hikers.

Turns out if you leave lodgepole regrowth alone long enough, it starts trying to become the trail.

Last week, our volunteer trail crew headed near the North Fork of the Blackfoot to tackle thick regrowth from the 2017 North Fork Fire that was slowly swallowing sections of the Lake Creek and Lake Mountain trails whole. After brushing about two miles of trail, hikers and riders can once again tell the difference between the trail and the forest.

Big thanks to this crew for putting in the work and keeping these trails open, and accessible. Montana’s public lands stay usable because folks like this show up.

Last summer, millions of acres of federal public land were nearly put on the auction block. Montanans and Americans across the country spoke up, and together we pushed back.

Now, the Public Lands Integrity Act would help ensure any future attempt to sell public lands faces real public process and transparency.

84% of Montana voters support keeping public lands in public hands. It’s time for our leaders to back those words with action.

Tell Senators Daines & Sheehy to support the Public Lands Integrity Act:

Take Action Here:

Your voice carries weight, and together, our voices serve as a formidable force for protecting public lands and waters. Speak up so we can keep Montana wild.
