I know I have a lot more friends on here than I'll be able to talk to in the next couple weeks, so I figured I'd give this a shot. PLEASE READ.

The 10-year anniversary of The Friendship Center's new building is this month. We are selling bricks at $1000 each to be placed on the shelter's property. Our goal is 50. Why do we need this? Please read on.

Most of you know I'm on the board of The Friendship Center, a women's shelter that does incredible work for violence survivors. Last year, we lost a 750k grant. Major ouch. But with our frugal staff and the AMAZING fundraising skills of our executive director, we only find ourselves 75k short in this fiscal year. Still an ouch.

With the increased services that we provide, and a building that needs maintenance, we need your help.

If you can buy a brick, please let me know. This shelter is very important to our community. I guarantee that your contribution will help at least one person desperately in need of assistance.

Call me. Or PM me. Thank you!

Just a reminder that we need $$ to make this march a success! Donate if you're able please!

Great news!!! The YWCA Helena has offered to co-lead the Women’s March on Montana! Because of this, we can now take tax-deductible donations to help with the permit costs, security, printing, etc. Additional donations will be put towards transportation (e.g., busses, vans) to help people from all over Montana get to Helena on January 21st!

Please consider donating if you cannot come – or even if you can! We are all volunteers, donating our time and could use financial assistance!

To pay online, click the following link. You can donate via paypal without a fee. You MUST type in “Women’s March” in the note to the seller (i.e., the YWCA Helena) so the funds get directed to the right place. http://www.ywcahelena.org/

If you’d prefer to mail in a donation, please send checks to YWCA Helena, PO Box 518, Helena, MT 59624. You must specify “women’s march” in the memo field of the check.

And lastly, if you can’t donate $$, consider donating your time. We need volunteers! Just contact me!

Thanks to all of you, this march will be a success!

YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

I had the pleasure of being on a nationwide conference call with Women’s March organizers. When we did roll call, 34 state + DC, London, and Canada organizers were on the phone. And Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, Bernice King. (yes, I know the controversy that surrounds some of her beliefs and activism. there were several people on the phone from the LGBTQ community, and we acknowledged that baggage comes with every one of us. she still was very motivating and had wonderful advice).

Bernice King was asked to talk to us organizers and offer advice, words of wisdom, and support. I want to share some quotes with you that she shared with us. One from her father, her mother, and one from her. I’m not sure there was a dry eye on the phone.

She referenced Michelle Obama’s “when they go low, we go high” before quoting her dad: we shall “forever conduct our struggles on the plane of dignity and discipline.”

Bernice King: “This is just the beginning. It’s not going to be easy. This is a revolution for real. This will be a spectrum of colors, consciousness, and inclusiveness like never before.”

Coretta Scott King: “Women. When the soul of the nation is to be saved, you must become its soul.”

Oh yes.

I am so honored to be a part of this revolution. I will not sit this out quietly. Please join me.

Worth the read or watch. We have a lot of work still to do. Never give up.

At 91, former President Jimmy Carter still seems unstoppable. In this TED Talk, his words are stunning and unprecedented. A Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and great humanitarian, President Carter touches on the many unspeakable crimes against women, not...

Hi everyone! It's that time of year again! Empty Bowls is April 5th!

Every year, we need people like you to help The Friendship Center make Empty Bowls a success, and we appreciate every second you give!

Being a volunteer you:
1. Feel great about helping others and giving back to the community!
2. Get a free empty bowls volunteer t-shirt that you can proudly wear while volunteering.
3. Have an opportunity to buy a discounted ticket for soup and a bowl. The regular price is $25, but as a volunteer we want to show you our appreciation by offering you a ticket for $10. We will have them for purchase if you help on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. Of course, if you would like to pay the full price, we won't turn it down! And, if you don't want a bowl - you don't need to buy a ticket (soup is free for volunteers!).

Please PM me if you're interested in volunteering, and I'll get back with you as to shifts and jobs available. Or you can email Deb at [email protected]

It is with great sadness that I share that I cannot organize a V-Day Helena event this year. The decision was difficult to make and was made because of a personal situation. I am so very sorry. Many of you have been looking forward to another year, but I just won't be able to do it. I plan to return in 2017 with One Billion Rising and The Va**na Monologues again!

Thanks so much for your continued support to help end violence against women and girls!

In solidarity,
Deb
